I know nothing about Dune outside of this game, and from what I've seen of actual Dune fans, I clearly made the smart choice.

I'm kind of confused as to how this fits into the books.

After the initial trilogy, where Paul Atreides becomes a blind prophet, fakes his death, Alia goes insane with the Baron Harkonnen in her head, and then Paul dies for real, his kids take over after various assassination attempts by having Leto II become part worm by allowing worm DNA to seep into his skin. Then in the next book, several thousand years have passed only to reveal that he has become a gigantic God Emperor Worm. But he had a giant worm body and a humanish looking face so this is WAY off.

After 500 extremely boring pages of exposition where Leto II just talks a lot about how awesome it is to be in charge of the galaxy as a God Emperor Worm, he is killed by some chick who rips open his belly and hundreds of baby worms scuttle into the sands, all bearing his DNA and some trace of his memory. Holy freaking nightmare books I can't unread.

THEN, in the next two books, it's all new characters interacting with for some reason a clone of Duncan Idaho, and the Bene Gesserit have to fight Space Whores.

I'm not kidding. Literally. Space Whores.

The book "dune" is pretty good!

Also the virgin games "dune" blew my mind.. I actually still think thats a pretty cool game. strategy/adventure combo

Of the books, the ones written by Frank Herbert are the best. However, they suffer a bit from being dated sci-fi (I do find it hard to fathom a future where things as simple as text messaging don't exist or other fairly plausible technologies) and having pretty stilted prose.

However, as Penny-Arcade put it, the ones written after Frank died are pretty much his offspring and other writers digging up Herbert's body and dry-fucking the corpse.

Herbert really should have stopped after the third book. The story basically ends there on a perfect note. The rest of the books just get weaker and weaker. The 7th and 8th Dune books that his son wrote just put salt in the wound.

I read up the book 2. Couldnt get past the first few chapters of book 3, just couldnt keep my interest. All the characters and plotlines that interested me already resolved and I was left with boring space intrigue.

Caminante! ARE YOU TROLLING?!!

Killer Joe - 2013-05-04

I walked away once the space Jews showed up.

Paracelsus - 2013-05-04

First book's great.

Oktay - 2013-05-04

It is RoUS who's trolling. And God Emperor is very enjoyable. And he never talks about how awesome it is, he only talks about how sucky it is, how he wishes he didn't have to do it. So there.

Oktay - 2013-05-04

But the cover... the cover...

I've only ever read God Emperor Of Dune and I really loved it. Haven't read a single one of the others though.

Oktay - 2013-05-05

I think you should read them and post your impressions, I'm very curious.

When I was a freshman in college, I once saw my math professor holding GEOD, and I said "you, read THAT??" and he lectured me for about half an hour about how Herbert should be up there with Shakespeare. It blew my mind that an adult would speak so highly of what everyone usually poops on.

snothouse - 2013-05-04

When I see tags like these, I realize why the search engine doesn't work well.

fedex - 2013-05-04

I believe that is what is known as "trolling the tags"

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-04

I'd almost buy the idea that it was trolling if that wasn't a period in there rather than a comma.

unknown specimen - 2013-05-04

The dune books are like watching a man slowly lose his grasp on reality. You want to reach out and tell him it's alright and psychic Mohammed is just in his head. But it is already too late.

That being said it's been fun watching his son try and untangle the mess he made.
