I dunno, seems like the series is continuing its slow decline. They have such incredible production values (ignoring the fact that they're mostly just aping great crime films), if they would just mix the gameplay up a little they would really have something special. But nope, every GTA since III has the exact. same. gameplay.

All it took was adding a few novel mechanics and some different ambiance, and Red Dead Redemption was a masterpiece. It's like the guys making the GTAs don't wanna make video games, they'd rather be directing films. Unfortunately all they can come up with is remaking Scarface, Goodfellas, Boyz In The Hood, et al.

No worries tho, Saint's Row IV is out a few weeks before this, and it will no doubt hold me over till I can pick this up at half off during the Steam holiday sale.

Cena_mark - 2013-04-30

Its what turned me off of video games. I don't want a movie I just want to turn on the machine and have some action.

Cena_mark - 2013-04-30

I don't need cut scenes. I AM A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO RESCUE THE PRESIDENT!

Gmork - 2013-04-30

Nico's storyline kind of pulled me in, luis is a great character but I didnt care for the plot of his campaign, but Johnny... johnny and that whole storyline was fucking amazing and perfect for GTA. If they keep that energy up for Trevor's storyline? Oh man. I already know who my favorite is.

RocketBlender - 2013-04-30

I just can't see myself giving a fuck about GTA anymore. I mean really.

Gmork - 2013-04-30

If you haven't installed the native trainer, you haven't played gta4 at all.

RocketBlender - 2013-05-01

I shouldn't need to install shit for a game to actually be fun. The last GTA I actually had fun playing was Vice City. Show me a follow up to THAT, and you'll have my attention.

StanleyPain - 2013-05-01

I kind of like pretending that Michael is actually just an older Tommy Vercetti and that this is a continuation of Vice City.

Gmork - 2013-05-01

If you havent had fun on san andreas that's your problem, and makes you beyond saving

RocketBlender - 2013-05-01

San Andreas was just so... bloated. You spent the first several hours getting haircuts and playing dress up. They stuck your home base in literally the hardest part of the starting area to get to, and when you finally did power through all that shit, they send you to the desert. It wasn't until like more than halfway through the game that it even started to feel fun, and then promptly stopped again at the end with that whole turf wars system that Saints Row 2 had the decency to let you ignore entirely.

Sure, it was fun if you turned on cheats, and had some fun missions here and there, but the actual game was terribly paced at best. At least it wasn't 4 though, I'll give you that.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-02

Upon reflection, I agree with you about the starting area, what with sticking CJ's house in a cul-de-sac where the only real way to escape back there was by squeezing your car through a tiny pathway.

But I loved playing dress up! When CJ was banished to the boonies I decked him out in a cowboy hat, black muscle shirt and boots. Like a gangsta Darius Rucker, yo!

TheSupafly - 2013-04-30

Well I'm excited anyway. I always enjoyed exploring the rockstar environments, and they always pack their games with tons more content than most other games to make it worth the price, fuck I still play through 4 every so often. So as long as the missions are well thought-out and interesting I don't see how this couldn't be a safe game I don't have to worry about not being satisfied by.

Also I think I really wanna play as Trevor.

Gmork - 2013-04-30

TLAD is my favorite GTA to play, San Andreas my favorite to reminisce about. GTAV is supposed to be basically what everyone has been screaming for - san andreas in gta4's engine. That mod just isn't polished enough to cut it.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-04-30

GTA IV was the weakest entry in the series, and I still had enough fun plowing into crowds of people doing Tai Chi in Central Park with an Escalade while listening to Fela Kuti.

Both expansions for GTAIV were a modest improvement.

This looks brilliant.

Mother_Puncher - 2013-04-30

Trevor is the clear winner out of all this

TheOtherCapnS - 2013-05-01

Any protagonist that looks like Harvey Pekar is okay by me.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-05-01

I think drunken violent slobs always make the best protagonists.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-01

I wonder if one of Michael's missions is keeping Trevor away from his daughter?

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2013-05-01

Coming to PC in 2016.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-01

Okay, I want this. Badly. If I could just leap over summer and let it be September already, I'd do it.

StanleyPain - 2013-05-01

Sounds like you need Waitmate!

Hooker - 2013-05-01

Rockstar North/DMA used to be a great, trend-setting production studio that apparently sees it as an upgrade to go from trendsetting in video games to straight-to-DVD in Hollywood. This looks like every lame studio release ever.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-02

Read '"Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto" by David Kushner. If I'm remembering right, Sam Houser and friends became jaded after DMA/Rockstar hit major success and the boys had to run it like a soul-straining business instead of the fun after school-ish programmer's club they'd originally founded. Also Houser no longer wants the games to be silly frat house arcade crime sprees. Now he wants nothing short of realistic virtual reality.

This, though...the trailer alone makes it look like a throwback to the good ol' PS2 days, and that's a good thing. I'll have to stick with the words of friends and user comments, though. The professional reviews are most definitely going to be a buffet of open mouths for sloppy blowjobs. Slurp, slurp, GAME OF THE YEAR, sllurp, gulp.

StanleyPain - 2013-05-01

I get the feeling that with GTA4 there was a lot of different ideas about where the game should go, internally. The storyline made that readily apparent. I also think the stand-alone side-games, Lost and the Damned and Ballad of Gay Tony basically comprise the "real" GTA4 as it was likely intended to play out.
This game seems like they sort of have a better idea how they want it to be overall, and the idea of basically combining three storylines and characters will be interesting to see. Like many, I also hate the fact that the "old" GTA universe is dead and buried for some stupid reason, but it's hard to be too bummed by it since Saint's Row has filled the gap so nicely.

DavidBowiesLuckyTennisBall - 2013-05-01

Ok, very nice. But can I still drive a minibus to the top of a mountain and drive off it?

Also, stars for the Juggalo around the 3.35 mark.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-05-01

So do the GTA games have endings? Like, do the storylines actually matter and end?

I've always wondered this because I've played Vice City, San Andreas, and IV, and always got bored before any sort of conclusion happened.

Actually, I hate to admit it, but the radio was always the most interesting thing in the games to me.

Quad9Damage - 2013-05-02

Spoiler:

Both "Vice City" and "San Andreas" (the two out of the three you listed that I made it all the way through) end with your main character basking in the glory of being a multimillionaire with the entire city under his control. After the end credits, your character gets a bunch of phone calls from the side-characters/mission givers where they explain what they're up to. If there aren't any side missions left to play it's all free-roam.

Generic, maybe, but it was always fun getting there.
How dare you, etc.
