Reminds me of a kind of beetle(?) larvae I remember seeing in an episode of 'Life in the Undergrowth'. They would stay in clusters like this and climb up en masse onto vegetation, then wait for flying insects to land.

They would then swarm upon the flyer and use it as a taxi.
