I've always found it kind of ironic that the "choice vs. born this way" arguments have swapped sides. Back in the beginning of the gay rights movement, homosexuality being an active choice was considered empowering and was the stance generally taken by the movement, while the established way of thinking was that homosexuality wasn't a choice - it was a defect (either of upbringing or genetics or both).

So basically, anti-gay activists today are using one of the key arguments of the 1960s gay rights movement and nobody on either siode seems to realize it.

Back in the 60s they actually thought it was a mental disorder.

They say that today, but obviously it's just a euphemism. You disown your children because they're sick. What they really mean is "It's DORK sided!"

I'm quite sure a not insignificant number of people still think it's a mental disorder. I've had conversations with some of them, for one thing.

Also saying "it's a mental disorder" vs. saying "it's genetic" is mostly different because of the embedded value judgement in the first case, not becasue they mean substantially different things in the literal sense. It's kind of like "neurodiversity" vs. "neuroligical abnormality." They mean more or less the same thing but imply very different things.

"Not bad slam poetry" still means "abysmal" in the grand scheme of things, though.
