Ah yes, nothing like the video quality of an early 2000 recording to know you are dealing with greatness. Also, fighting games are pretty much saturated right now, anything coming out is tanking hard. Thank Capcom for releasing dozens of versions of the same games over and over.

Void 71 - 2013-02-01

This was recorded in 2008, when the looming release of SF4 had the potential to reinvigorate the genre with fresh gameplay mechanics and modern internet code. That dream died on release day and remains buried four years later.

What the genre needs is a Valve, a Bungie or a Blizzard to reinvigorate it and bring it into the modern age. Until that happens, fighting games are going to be relegated to a handful of ancient Japanese arcades and the basements of the Shoryuken crowd.

The genre needs to go back to sleep some years and think things over. Also, i'd rather not have developers with NO experience on the genre trying to make something on their style, specially a company like Blizzard.

It would seem that the genre has been fully exploited. When a new Street Fighter comes out I'm not expecting anything different, but new characters. Its a niche market is all just like the platform game nerds.

Fighting games went the way of adventure games where they didn't die so much as got their different elements absorbed into different genres.

The DotA genre is pretty much the present day incarnation of fighting games.

What the genre needs is a new Bloodlust Software.

As the resident fighting game neck beard, I am here to inform most of you that you are completely full of crap.

-IV was a blessing that rebooted the genre

-The only thing fighting games share with adventure games is that Joe Blow always claims to love playing these games -- but in reality never does.

-The genre is currently over saturated again, but this time not totally Capcom's fault. The players asked for those updates.

-The game type, like DOTA/RTS, requires too much practice time just to be mediocre. By the genres very nature it can not support more than 3-4 successful games at once. No one has time to practice and play 6-10 fighting games. So they will stick to the IP/developers they know and let unknown/unfamiliar games tank.

-I didn't even bother watching the video.

sosage: Capcom didn't release SFIV Special Arcade Tournament Edition vol. 1 because anyone asked them to. If they were just doing it out of the goodness of their heart, they could have made it all a free update. It would've been easy. Toggle the mechanics and toss in the extra characters -boom- done. They gouged you, pure and simple.

Void 71 - 2013-02-02

I didn't specifically mean Valve, Blizzard or Bungie. I meant a developer of their caliber that could refine and polish the fighting game formula like they did the FPS, RTS, roguelike, MMO, etc. formulas.

I actually wouldn't have minded all of the SF4 revisions if the core game wasn't a cobbled together mess and they were more significant than "here's a handful of fan service characters and some minor balance tweaks". When you compare how little SF4 changed in comparison Street Fighter Alpha, DarkStalkers or SF3, it seems like a wasted opportunity.

Old_Zircon - 2013-02-02

I did specifically mean Bloodlust Software.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2013-02-03

Blizzard did make a fighting game once: Justice League Task Force.

Gmork - 2013-02-03

Capcom and SNK both blow chunks for doing endless iterations. And theyre two of my favorite fighting game producers...

ADD-pandering button-mashers like Marvel vs Capcom took fighting games in the wrong direction - the quintessential 2d fighter is Capcom vs SNK 2 - but it desperately needed a continuation (WHERE THE FUCK IS 3 to come save the fighting game genre?!)

Old_Zircon - 2013-02-03

I'd just like to take a moment here to acknowledge Bloodlust Software's invaluable contribution to the fighter genre.

Cena_mark - 2013-02-01

Dude kinda looks like Wesley Willis, but without the soul for rock and roll.
