What makes this 3D, exactly?

I'ts binaural, which means the average listener will hear movement on the y and z axes in addition to the x axis (which is the only dimension normal stereo mixes can produce; depth is faked with mixing techniques but you can't create vertical dimension or sounds coming from BEHOND the listener without binaural recording). If your head size or shape deviates too far from average, it doesn't work as well. JUST SAYIN, PUNKINHEAD

Back in the 20th century they made binaural albums by putting microphones in a foam head with realistic ears and ear canals, and placing speakers and amplifiers around it to capture the 3-D effect we get IRL. It's actually older than stereo, being an obvious thing to do. For whatever reason it doesn't work perfectly, but does sound a lot better than stereo.

Also for whatever reason, it was cool to make binaural albums back in the 80s, Lou Reed and Roger Waters made a few but then they stopped because it's just as much of a pain in the ass to physically do as it sounds, and only works with headphones. They can probably do it digitally now.

Also this is cool but needs a soundtrack. Like, I put some Glenn Miller bump and grind on in the background with some reverb, and it gave the scene a whole new awesome ambiance. Cause this kinda cartoon psycho would have the TV or a radio on in the background.

I remember getting Thief: The Dark Project with my Sound Blaster card back sometime in the 90s and it having lots of test samples sort of like this one. Nothing quite so goofy though, sadly.
