This has to be my most quoted Simpsons line.

Innocent Bystander - 2013-01-17

It's that for a lot of people. And it's weird because it's just this random, crazy line.

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2013-01-17

It's not weird. Last Exit to Springfield is one of the Simpsons' greatest episodes. Granted, I prefer Mr. Burns' Grinch-ripoff poem, and Lisa playing Classical Gas.

Innocent Bystander - 2013-01-17

It is great, I'm just wondering why this line, out of all the golden age Simpsons lines, seems to stick with people.

There are so many things going on with this gag. It is a funny parody of writers (the monkey's body language), it is an effective satire of people's misunderstanding of infinity, and it is a nice joke about Mr. Burn's character that he would do this.

I'm fearful that the reason people quote it so often is that "blurst" is a funny word.

EvilHomer - 2013-01-17

It's not crazy at all. It reminds us that, for the Simpsons, this age was truly the blurst of times.

memedumpster - 2013-01-17

The joke is that Dickens was a HORRIBLE, UNREADABLE writer and "blurst" was an unacceptable bit of artistic license to improve the work and make it more interesting. That's how evil Monty Burns is as the new head writer for the Simpsons.

Richard Dawkins wrote a really interesting piece on the "Infinite Monkeys with Typewriters" meme, using it to illustrate the power of Darwinian selection in producing order out of an otherwise random and senseless system. It's a profound bit of work, simple and accessible yet completely compelling, and- at the risk of sounding a bit crazy- quite possibly capable of changing the entire course of human history, if only more people would read it.

Even so, whenever someone mentions monkeys and typewriters, I think about the Simpsons.

I guess it only takes one to ruin it for everybody.
