I had this kid I used to hang out with in high school just flip a shit today on Facebook and start on a tirade about how vaccines are how the government is secretly killing people, how 9/11 never happened, and yup, how Sandy Hook was completely staged. We were inseparable in high school, then I lost track of him. Next I hear after I friended him is that he had a kid and he split up with the mom, then got busted for smoking and carrying pot in my hometown, then had to go through rehab. Something about that just turned him into this conspiracy theorist nutbag. I can only assume it was the folks he was bunking with in rehab, or the fact that he's clearly a fucking idiot.

Schizophrenia doesn't always come on in a single, life consuming burst. It often starts manifesting itself in small bursts of crazy for years and years.
I had this close friend who started talking to me about souls and lunatic spiritual warfare he had been waging for years. He was still relatively sane at the time, so I smiled my way through that and pretended it was ok. A few years later, he was on the total loon fruit, but he still continued to have highly functional periods where he was socially and economically very successful because he was very smart.
Nowadays he's in an institution. :(

Thank Limbaugh and Ailes, they started planting the seeds for this shit 25 years ago.

I had a similar story, only my high school friend wound up joining a kosher-keeping Pentecostal sect (Because, you know, JUST IN CASE) and ran for city council of my home town as a Tea Party Republican, and won. For whatever reason, he unfriended me on Facebook, but his wife didn't, and proceeded to try shit during the Romney run, and I wound up laying her arguments down so flat that she unfriended me, but not before hubby laid a "YOU EVER COME AROUND ME AND MY FAMILY I'LL HAVE YOU ARRESTED" threat.

Some people I sort of know think that the Sandy tragedy was a conspiracy, their version is pretty unhinged as wel, for you see the presence of a gun lobbyist group's headquarters nearby means they took Lanza, Parallax Viewed him, gave him "intense military style training" with "military grade weapons" and thus set a cold-blooded killing machine loose just so they could drive up sales temporarily and or cause a push for heavy gun control that would leave weapons harder to find and therefore more expensive to sell via the black/gray market, or something.

A lot of this reaction seems to be a result of the right wing echo chamber, much in the same way we saw people like Karl Rove lose their shit on election night. These gun nuts are in their own little bubble of how no gun owner could possibly be an unhinged spree killer, no gun owner could ever turn a gun on someone unless their target was a criminal and/or government tyrant, etc.

When it does happen and their worldview is challenged, they can't handle it. It can't be true, or they have to re-think all of their "guns make people super-patriot heroes defending liberty against the godless liberals" dogma. So, in response, not only isn't the problem that just about anyone can get a gun, the real problem is that the conspiracy to stage killings so guns can be taken away or restricted must be exposed, because THAT'S the only RATIONAL explanation.

These days, the mating call of such individuals seems to be "wake up, people."

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-01-11

There's never been a time in my life where the phrase "wake up people" wasn't a joke.

The internet means, no matter how crazy you are, someone will agree with you. Ideas like this hit critical mass and infect other people with broken senses of cause and effect.

"guns make *white* people super-patriot heroes defending liberty against the godless liberals"
