So, like PETA then, except a million times more defensible.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/apr/20/online-anonymi ty-death-threats This was fun.

"One morbidly obese woman who was very active on dieting forums cursed my hideous appearance."

the nerve!

kingofthenothing - 2013-01-09

She didn't murder anything, she just put her cat to sleep instead of taking it to the vet. And then she made a purse out of it because she wanted to keep her cat close.

Then she got a bajillion hatemails and made a book of like 1% of those hatemails.

Anita Skarkeesian's legacy lives on.

Konversekid - 2013-01-09

That article is portraying her acts quite negatively without really understanding why she does them. From looking at other articles it seems like most of her instances of abusing animals are essentially replications of how those species are treated either in factory farms or as pets, and the majority of her critics seem to not understand that her intention is to show people how terribly animals are normally treated.

I can't really say that what she is doing is that bad, despite an intuitive uneasiness that I have with her actually recreating normalized forms of animal abuse even though it very likely is consequentially going to prevent much of it. To be honest, she has a really interesting way to get across how immoral factory farms are, and definitely is more agreeable than the majority of animal activists.

CornOnTheCabre - 2013-01-09

honestly, beyond the totally unearned sanctimony, i have absolutely no problem with this artist's work.

then again i don't have any problems with GMOs or factory farms either, so i could just be a psychopath. but hey! when I'm on death's door, feel free to wring my neck and make a fancy purse out of me -- i'll probably end up providing more genuine utility there than at least half of the people making death threats will with their entire lives.

poorwill - 2013-01-10

Think pretty highly of yourself don't you mr. fancy purse.

CornOnTheCabre - 2013-01-10

i'll have a cell phone pouch and everything!

TimidAres - 2013-01-10

I really dont have an issue with this woman's decision.
A little different, yes, but it was her cat. We make food and accessories out of all kinds of other animals, why not?
This was her personal choice, shes not hurting anyone, kudos to her.

fractured - 2013-01-10

I don't think she's protesting anything. She just points out the contradictions in critics' positions.

How strange! She should learn to be more proper so as not to upset me!

Adham Nu'man - 2013-01-10

Yeah, I also feel that article is sensationalistic and overtly sentimental. I don't see anything wrong with what she does, but I did want to point out that this was not a one off thing. This is her shtick, if you will.

Gmork - 2013-01-10

5 for evil. Attention-seeking whore breaks her still living "depressed" cat's neck and makes a handbag.

"When I broke my cat's neck and made her into a handbag I had no idea what I was getting myself into."

Bollocks.

Gmork - 2013-01-10

Seriously - her cat's DEPRESSION is the reason. How do you not see that as strange?

"Fido's acting a bit down lately, I think its about time to TWIST HIS FUCKING HEAD OFF."

Yeah that's how sane people deal with things.

Zoot42 - 2013-01-10

I totally agree. She is a sick fuck and is clearly just a sociopath using art as an excuse. Animal abuse is horrid but abusing more to "send a message" is ridiculous. Think about what would happen if an "artist" did this to human beings because we do horrible shit to each other all the time.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-01-10

"in 2012 she explained this was a made up story to raise attention for her opinion about the different threatment of pets compared to other animals. The cat was actually very ill and would die of its disease"

So yes, she is an "attention whore", but she didn't break the cat's neck because it was depressed. However, it is also disingenuous of her to say "oh, look at the hypocritical society how much hate mail they send me" when she went out of her way to give a stupid reason for killing her pet.

chairsforcheap - 2013-01-10

a lot of dutch art culture is basically just trolling it seems these days... I enjoyed orvillecopter, I've never liked tinkebell. She seems like a sadistic sensationalist fuckhead who wants to rub her shit in peoples faces. Also, breaking your cats neck albeit sick / depressed, or whatever, takes a certain type of psychotic and despicable personality. Reminds me of that danish guy who put a goldfish in a live blender, and then whoopdee shit! someone turned it on!
