gravelstudios - 2012-12-28 People with culture have better things to do than watch this over and over again. I know teenagers who do literally nothing in their free time BUT watch videos on youtube. Face it, if you're over 20, you're not in pop culture's driver seat anymore, you're in the passenger seat, trying desperately to push a brake pedal that isn't there.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-12-28 The problem with that metaphor is that it suggests that pop culture is a single vehicle moving in a single direction. At Christmas Dinner, my 19 year old niece, a college freshman, recognized this video when I showed it to my father on my laptop. At Thanksgiving, she picked up on my reference to Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury".
Super-Popularity on youtube is always going to be a kind of badge of mediocrity, in a least common denominator (Ray William Johnson) kind of way. Smart people watch dumb videos (if only to wring their hands and feel superior) and so do dumb people.
A click requires no money, and virtually no effort. I like "Gagnam style" enough to click on it a dozen times, and they show up in the billion views.
Maybe the billion uploads by all kinds of people that get a hundred clicks each are as much what 21 century pop culture is all about.

gravelstudios - 2012-12-28 I think I came off a little too negatively. I actually enjoy Gangnam style for what it is. I watched the video on youtube once, and have heard it on the radio a couple times without changing the station. It's fun, and I'm cool with that. I'm just recognizing the fact that regardless of whether I like it or not, pop culture is not aimed at me anymore. Ironically enough, it's aimed at kids like the Obama girls.
