Not all that heavy on plot or character, but good for what it was, i.e. a string of excuses to animate good-looking muscular people doing epic athletic things in a pulp sci-fi/fantasy setting.

Definitely the best-looking, most consistent film Bakshi ever put out. Truly a Frazetta painting brought to life.

EvilHomer - 2012-12-16

I was JUST talking about this movie, not five minutes ago! Tried to explain why it was his best, to a friend of mine who's never seen any of Bakshi's films.

We're all caught up in Hobbit fever, aren't we?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-12-16

Bakshi didn't animate The Hobbit. That was Rankin-Bass.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-12-17

And Rankin-Bass Hobbit is amazing. Brother Theodore Gollum IS Gollum to me. I'll never get used to CGI Gollum.

EvilHomer - 2012-12-17

No, not THAT Hobbit. New Hobbit fever, I mean! Hobbit that came out this weekend and has doubtlessly caused us all to regress to our natural, Tolkein-faggot forms. Bakshi did his own version of Fellowship, which was even more forgettable and even less well received than the (unfairly maligned) Rankin-Bass Hobbit musical.

BHWW - 2012-12-17

The Rankin-Bass Hobbit was a more than decent adaption, partly because the makers were making a children's movie based on a children's book (ignoring the college cult that had formed around it) and managed to capture the cozy spirit of the novel even if it missed out on some of the details,
Unlike, say, turning it into an EPIC TRILOGY that slogs through tedious backstory for hours and hours of guys in renfest costumes stomping around New Zealand, that fails to capture the spirit but hey this CGI elf palace has been rendered just right.

Old_Zircon - 2012-12-17

I think the FIRST movie of the Peter Jackson LOTR trilogy captured the spirit of the books pretty well. By the third one I didn't even bother, though.

Anyway I didn't post this video because of his new Hobbit movie, I posted it because I was talking to a friend of mine about how good Coonskin is over lunch yesterday and he reminded me that I still haven't seen this one.

Pretty sure it's "Fire" not "Fira"

cognitivedissonance - 2012-12-17

DOES NOT HAVE "THOMAS KINKADE" TAG. NEEDS "THOMAS KINKADE" TAG.

CAPITALIZATION MANDATORY.

EvilHomer - 2012-12-17

Hear hear! Every time someone playa hates on Thomas Kinkade, you can direct them to this film and set the record straight.

Old_Zircon - 2012-12-17

Done, but it's already an active tag so no capitalization.

Racketeer - 2012-12-17

The other background artist for this film was James Gurney, author of Dinotopia and Kinkade's college roommate. He wrote a series about working on the film on his blog. Here's a post about working with Kinkade:
