Does this show get better after the first season? I got tired of the wacky, kooky lead actor after a few shows.

I'm gotten into the habit of needing a mildly amusing, but not engaging or stimulating show on netflix right before bed. Psych filled that need over the course of a soul crushing job (later on it would be Burn Notice).

The two best were the Twin Peaks tribute episode ("Dual Spires" Season 5 Ep 12) and the one based on The Hangover ("Last Night Gus" Season 6 Ep 2).

My nickname for Gus would be "Hans McClaine". "He's a great guy, just keep him away from tall buildings."

Oh, and Season 6 episode 3 ("This Episode Sucks") has the world's saddest cameo by Corey Feldman which is worth wincing through.

I was forced to watch four episodes of this out of politeness. The alternative was Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers.

This show is basically Scooby Doo for adults. The characters are one-dimensional and the plots are ridiculously predictable. The dialogue is occasionally witty, but is smothered in so much banal horseshit that it does not in any way make up for it.

I loathe this show.

Fabio: I suggest QI. I've been falling asleep to that for years. Prior to that, my go-to was a video lecture series titled "TTCVideo - Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Dark Side of the Universe". The guy has the perfect monotone - You can pay attention to what he's saying very easily, but, if you're tired, his voice becomes a blur and he almost never makes any inflection that might wake you. Also, you can learn about cosmology and quantum physics at the same time.

I love this show. It's formulaic but makes up for its structuring by being fucking hilarious with never a dull moment. The lead actor has produced, co-written and/or directed several episodes; pretty much everyone involved with "Psych" has embraced the show and shaped it into their own thing. There's a ton of improv. Shawn's an obnoxious dick but isn't a fucking sociopath like other 'bad' TV protagonist so popular these days. The murder mysteries rarely get too dark for a silly comedy. And my girlfriend and I found something we have 100% in common with each other over our love for "Psych."

Seconding FABIO's recommendation of "QI" as good falling-asleep TV. MST3K works pretty well too.

If you're in a mood for history, "Byzantium: The Lost Empire" works well, followed by "A History of Britain" and "The First World War". ("The Civil War" almost succeeds, except Ken Burns pisses me off by trying to be too even-handed to the South. So he keeps implying that it was really a generalized dispute over states' rights, when it was specifically slavery, and they only started mumbling about states' rights once it was clear they were losing and history would frown upon them.)

I'll check out Qi for something I'm not crazy about but helps soothe me to sleep.

I call it the Garrison Keillor effect.

I like some formulaic shows, this one was too annoying for me.
