This is why Europeans conquered the Americas so easily. They had centuries to develop immunities to diseases that thrive in sedentary civilizations.

As POETV's resident medieval historian, several things must be mentioned.

First of all, either tag it 'Middle Ages' or 'medieval' or Medieval Europe'. 'Medieval ages' is redundant and grammatically incorrect.

Also, this guy fetishizes shit to a considerable degree. Seriously, I like a good piece of popular history, but this show is out to gross us out rather than educate. Medieval London was indeed nasty, but it was nowhere near as nasty as this show would lead us to believe.
Also, he minimizes the fact that London did in fact have sewers and plumbing; not very well developed it is true, but efforts were made to keep the city clean.

Also, there is nothing exclusively medieval about dodgy butchers selling rancid meat; one can find this in recent times.

The Mothership: resident medieval historian, dysentery apologist.

Yeah, don't listen to Mothership, Mothership's is a disinfo shill in the pay of the dysentary lobby

Thanks for clearing up the tag. I usually don't put enough effort into them.

I don't think that this show was made purely to show disgusting content, because there is some decent educational content in it. I think that all of the visual effects were used to reach either a younger, or more visually orientated, audience. Or, the creators were trying to stay relevant in today's entertainment industry. Every network is making shows like this now.

As for the historical accuracy, the host based his findings on written records made in a particular time in history. The appearance of the filth may have been played up for ratings, but the city probably was having massive sanitation failures. He gave examples of court cases, and streets that were named after how disgusting they were. People living then even invented those ridiculous shoes to travel above the waste.

In the end, the series is about how important proper waste management is. You could be told that, or with the magic of CG you can ride on a magical shit-coaster and experience it first hand.

I'd read what the Fatherboat wrote, but his presentation doesn't have CG and buckets of shit.

The Mothership - 2012-11-17

goddamn cena, that is is precisely my point.

and flotsam, there is legitimate educational value here, I'm just a nit-picky motherfucking historian.

mashedtater - 2012-11-17

i love you both have such a civilized agreement to disagree with facts and such over shit

jreid - 2012-11-16

Not really related but, you know, part of me envies the depth of history Europe has. The town I live in goes back maybe 200 years at most - which is a lot, but the idea that London is two fucking thousand years old is just staggering to me.
