His point doesn't get interesting until at least 5 minutes in. Oh and Big Bang Theory is terrible, unfunny television. "Damaging" gives it too much credibility. If he wants to talk brilliant "sub-culture" TV, just look to something like Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Those are people worth relating to.

EvilHomer - 2012-11-14

Prior to 5:00, I thought this guy was just a miserable cunt. After 5:00, I realized he was a miserable cunt midsemester through Freshman Sociology.

I don't really like Big Bang Theory; I've tried watching it once or twice, but it's just not funny. However, I can't bring myself to hate it, because Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica has a recurring cameo as one of the character's sexual fantasies.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-11-14

Original Starbuck or new Starbuck?

EvilHomer - 2012-11-14

New Starbuck, but I'm sure the Big Bang fanfic scene is way ahead of you on Old.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-11-14

I think they missed a golden opportunity not making Parson's character gay. Of course, it is CBS and the thought of a homosexual super-genius frightens and confuses old people.

Jim Quin - 2012-11-14

Nerd is angry that people more attractive than himself (including those filthy cooties-ridden girly-girls, SHOCK HORROR) are in genre fandom. Inevitable flashbacks to growing up in nerd concentration camps. "Generation 1 Transformers and My Little Ponies were infinitely superior to HUAHGABLAGLHUGLGLGHURF" ad nauseam.

StanleyPain - 2012-11-14

I kinda sorta agree with, like, 1/10th of the point he's making, but jesus who cares. Nerd culture shit must die.

Old_Zircon - 2012-11-14

Harvey Pekar pretty much covered this issue in the 80s.

BHWW - 2012-11-14

Our precious nerd culture is being watered down! I bet these poseurs couldn't even cultishly repeat one-liners until they've been completely denuded of humor. The cake is a lie! Ha ha! Please don't let me die alone.

Old_Zircon - 2012-11-14

Fun fact: "poseur" is not a linked tag. How is that possible?

Old_Zircon - 2012-11-14

I'll be back in 5, got to get the "white whine" tag linked.

Riskbreaker - 2012-11-14

Getting worked out over irrelevant shit, the definition of the internet.

memedumpster - 2012-11-14

Big Bang theory is pro nerd propaganda, the reality is the evil of Google and every other tech company on earth. THOSE are nerds, real ones, the evil ones who must be destroyed, not portrayed pluckily as socially ineffective on television. It would be alike a tv show where Nazis were shown never being able to catch those rascally Jews.

Eh, this is a rough draft troll.

FABIO - 2012-11-14

There's no need to drag Hogan's Heroes into this.

Hooker - 2012-11-14

Hahaha, holy shit. poeTV, a site largely made up of high school undesirables, immediately start trying to dismiss the nerds. Unreal.

I'm with the author of this. Fuck shallow and vain people. Fuck people who call themselves buddists, or nerds, or punk, or whatever after reading the Wikipedia entries. Fuck The Big Bang Theory. I may not like to associate with gaming nerds, but I want to associate with the people he's talking about less.

Old_Zircon - 2012-11-14

Fuck people who call themselves nerds regardless of context. This guy is the same as the people he's talking about.

I didn't watch the video yet.

FABIO - 2012-11-14

My parents picked up regularly watching Big Bang Theory just in time after their previous show Everybody Loves Raymond just ended, ensuring that I always dread visiting home.

This guy sucks but his sort of point hits home.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2012-11-14

Yeah, nothing says "shallow and vain" quite like building your personality and social network around conspicuous consumption of videogames, anime, and sci-fi.

Hooker - 2012-11-14

Generally speaking, I think social undesirables tend to look for a community that accepts them, and that tends to be the communities of other social undesirables. Magic: the Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, video games, poeTV, etc. The popularization of "nerd culture" is done by people who just want attention, and I imagine it feels like the people society likes are now taking away the one social outlet they have.

I guess, to sum it up, I feel pity for real nerds / geeks / losers / whatever you want to call them. I feel loathing for people that drape themselves in whatever kitsch is popular at the moment.

Old_Zircon - 2012-11-15

Fashion Geeks are just as bad as fashion punks but I've got little patience for people who define their identities by their nerd hobby.

I'm probably just in denial about what having nearly 3000 records and half a dozen amplifiers makes me, though.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-11-14

The words "nerd" and "geek" stopped being insults at least ten years ago.

Aelric - 2012-11-14

WE MUST PROTECT OUR PRECIOUS NERD CULTURE FROM THE FOREIGN INVADERS!!!! THEIR INFERIOR INTELLECTS MUST NOT POLLUTE OUR BLOODLINE, OUR HERITAGE!!!!! SNICHEN SNORCHEN STIEN!!!! SIEG HEIL!

BHWW - 2012-11-14

Oh gaawwwwwwwd, these people have no idea what it is to be a geek or a nerd, YOU CAN'T TRULY ENJOY STAR WARS OR VIDYA GAMES UNLESS YOU'VE KNOWN THE HURT WE HAVE

Toenails - 2012-11-14

He watched five hours of The Big Bang Theory in one night just because he didn't want to be challenged about it on the internet.

There's a word for someone that would do that, but for the life of me, I can't quite put my finger on it...

Toenails - 2012-11-14

wasn't meant to be a reply... but ahh... oh well. Just pretend I barged in on your conversation, interrupting you in mid-sentence.

Blue - 2012-11-14

I love it how he thinks nerds are being misrepresented by The Big Bang Theory but he completely discounts out of hand Anita making the same claim about women and video games.

I must have missed the fucking episode where Sheldon set himself on fire and waited for permission to stop drop and roll for a pretty girl that promised to merely allow him to be in her presence.

Void 71 - 2012-11-14

Hopefully he does a video explaining how you can tell the difference between genuine and counterfeit nerds. Would a quick sniff test and BMI calculation be sufficient? Is there a list of questions that must be asked while the subject is wired to a lie detector?

memedumpster - 2012-11-14

Do you play videogames on a...

A.) Console.
B.) Computer.
C.) Unwilling Human Mind.

Toenails - 2012-11-14

The Dungeons and Dragons' term "THACO" refers to:

A.) A type of monster
B.) A specific war hammer imbued with magical properties.
C.) It's THAC0 not THACO, gawd, what a fucking moron.

blllaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh semantics WORDS CAN MEAN MANY THINGS YOU FUCKING NERD.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-11-15

People who care about nerdsploitation are dorks.

Geek > nerd > dork > chimo.

Nikon - 2012-11-15

After listening to most of this I think this guy needs some therapy and to move on from whatever traumatic event he experienced. It sucks that it happened but it happened years ago. It's time for him to focus his energies on things he finds rewarding and meaningful now.

As far as the Big Bang Theory goes, just based on the description alone, I think it's probably a very bad show and not something that should be watched voluntarily. I think that about a lot of tv shows and I don't watch them either. Sure they stink but like most commercial products you don't have to engage them or think about them unless you choose to.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-11-15

Kids become social outcasts because the other kids need someone to be an "outsider" just as they need to belong to the "inside" group. And they often aren't discriminating when choosing their outcasts. Their reasons can be petty and possibly something the outcast has no control over at all, e.g. their economic class, ethnic background, physical appearance, etc. It undoubtedly hurts a great deal when kids who were happy to play with you only the day before suddenly decide that there is something "wrong" with you and that you are no longer welcome around them.

Often, the outsider is lucky enough to find a group they can fit in with. Unfortunately, in too many cases, the unlucky kid becomes totally isolated from social interaction with others their own age.

Once they fall behind a little, they tend to keep falling behind. As we begin to develop socially, our brains build circuits that help us pick up cues from behavior, vocal inflections, facial expressions and body language. We learn what makes an appropriate topic for conversation and how to properly express ourselves. We even learn to develop mechanisms for dealing with rejection and embarrassment.

Anyone who didn't get to experience all that as they were growing up is going to come off as odd, rude or even creepy when they do try to interact with others and are often shunned by others even into adulthood.

An adult who went through this as a child is often resentful, bitter and feels, with some justification, that they got a raw deal. They are locked out of most of life's joys and pleasures. They have no social support group, limited career prospects and little chance of having a partner or family of their own. In an effort to fill their need for friends, they most often turn to other socially undeveloped outcasts. Unfortunately, this is the worst thing for them. Their paranoia, depression, lack of confidence and bitterness are only amplified and encouraged by others who are just as bad off as themselves.

So you can say "It was a long time ago. Just get over it, already." but that's like telling anyone else with a mental problem to "get over it."

They do need help and lots of patience & understanding.

Nikon - 2012-11-15

I wasn't trying to say that he needs to just get over it. I did say that he needs therapy and to move on from it. If I came off as callous and insensitive, I didn't mean to.
