SNL has always sucked most of the time. It's like Baseball. There are good and bad seasons, good and bad lineups. Strikeouts are always more numerous than home runs, but even a bad season has a few home runs, and the home runs are glorious. People have been complaining about SNL not being as good as it used to be since Chevy Chase left the show in 1977, but that's because people tend to remember the memorable and forget the forgettable. The show has always had an audience of people who are willing to watch it exactly as you would watch a baseball game, expecting most of it to be pretty boring, hoping to see something really thrilling.

I also want to point out that SNL of old used to occasionally produce iconic characters (like this) rather than just a ton of skits that are about as funny as open-mic multiple-idiot night at the local improv comedy club.

I suspect that SNL isn't getting as much money for writing as it used to when network tv was getting all the viewers, and that's led to a certain decline. Specifically, we're getting recurring sketches instead of recurring characters. Back in the day, Ed Grimley or the Coneheads would interact with different characters in different situations. More recently, we've got "Gilley". or "What's up with that?", which is the same skit performed over and over until it's painful to watch.
In recent years, when we get a good moment, it's usually in the commercials or the digital short.

Uhhh to me, this is SNL at its best. I love that this sketch is timeless, no horribly dated reference to whatever lame shit was occurring in pop culture. Grimley is delightfully weird, and just listen to that crowd pop for the Sajak picture defense! Also Lovitz's devil is one of the best things SNL EVER did.
