I don't get how AA has endured so long given it's cultish overtones and its tragically low success rate (something like 12%).

Wander - 2012-10-28 Nobody actually has statistics on how good AA is, because they don't collect them. Anybody who tells you they have those statistics is bullshitting on one side or the other.
|
Xenocide - 2012-10-28 We also don't have salvation statistics for the rest of Christianity, because the dead always hang up on pollsters.
|
Adham Nu'man - 2012-10-28 The few and limited studies conducted have shown that the recovery rate between AA and other.programs is.roughly thesame.
|
Wander - 2012-10-28 I didn't make it clear, but I don't support AA, either. I just don't really think it does harm or good.

Well, you can't really judge success by Christian standards until you die and can confirm that there is in fact a psychopath waiting to give you a crown and a key to your own cloud mansion.

Semi-dupe.

This was posted earlier in the week and has this bit of the rant as encompassed in him bashing Dr. Drew.

Quad9Damage - 2012-10-28 Yeah, I submitted that. The Dr. Drew rant is track 2 of the album and this is track 3.

How far are they willing to tolerate this "make up your own god" alternative? Let's say I decide I worship Inspector Gadget, and when it's prayer time at the AA meetings, I begin singing his theme song really loud, followed by a tastefully chanted summary of one of his hilarious adventures. Can they call me out on this? Even if chanting "Go Go Gadget Sobriety" under my breath is the only thing standing between me and dying in a ditch from alcohol poisoning?
Alternatively, I want to know what happens to the guy who responds to the "you can make up your own God" advice with "oh, you mean just like everyone else does?"

Fuck AA so hard. I saw so many otherwise talented therapists buy into their bullshit as a social worker. Also, when I was deeply suffering from bipolar disorder, one of my mother's somewhat well-intentioned friends tried to use AA crap like higher powers and service to others to cure me of the bipolaritis. I'd never drank more than one beer a month in my life and smoked pot only ten times.
Also, fuck the South. I suppose I'm lucky I didn't get burned alive for witchcraft.

I didn't need AA to quit drinking. I just woke up in the hospital and am still paying off an 00 hospital bill. That's when the logic side of my brain went "You know what? This isn't working!" and I haven't had a drop since.
|
WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2012-10-29 AA sucks but "Why can't alcoholics just stop drinking so much???!!" is a really shitty attitude to have. Just because you were able to reign in your own drinking doesn't mean that works for everyone.

joelkazoo - 2012-10-30 I was just relaying my personal experience, and was not trying to build it up nor tear down others.

Yeah, I've wondered about that "higher power" part if you're an atheist.
