Lemongrab is powerfully unsettling.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-10-19

I really have to wonder where he comes up with certain characters. I'm guessing this show is like therapy for the writers but the more nightmarish aspects of it are completely bizarre. I can't believe they are still marketing it as a children's cartoon.

Simillion - 2012-10-19

Yes but, compared to Ren And Stimpy.... and I rest my case.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-10-19

Is that Nickelodeon Ren & Stimpy or SpikeTV Ren & Stimpy?

Blue - 2012-10-19

This is how children's programming should be. Kids aren't stupid, they're just developing. They don't need to be protected from the complexity of the world. They need to be immersed in it because they're developing into adults and we don't want them to grow up stupid.

People who make unwatchable children's shows are bad people. Remember how at the end of an episode of He-Man someone from the show would talk about what happened during the episode and use it as a teaching moment to touch on some larger concept? In healthy homes, that's something parents do for their children. Good parents watch TV with their kids at least some of the time.

When I see shitty, condescending and annoying kids' TV shows I can't help but imagine they're being lovingly crafted by that tweaker woman that crushed her boyfriend's head with an ATM in Breaking Bad. I'm pretty sure that the annoying voices are so that you're fairly warned that the kid is up and going into the living room may mean you'll get roped into changing a diaper.

I can't find that clip on Youtube to submit it. Somebody should do that.

Paragraph 1: absolutely.
Paragraph 2: yeah, but it's the exception.
Paragraph 3: what?

I love how none of this deters PB from playing god every other week.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-19

I don't think she's one of the good guys, actually. I think Finn is blind to her true nature just because she's a princess and, you know, "princesses can't be evil."

Look at the Goliad episode. It didn't take much for what was, in essence, a Princess Bubblegum clone to turn into an evil overlord.

You could try arguing that she's amoral and/or places the pursuit of science and "the greater good" over all else, but she wanted to have an innocent dude summarily executed without a trial or anything just because she thought he doused her with a potion that rendered her temporarily bald and green.

Kabbage - 2012-10-19

Heh, well, she's definitely an amoral tyrant, but I never got the sense you were meant to take any of this particularly seriously. It's adorably twisted, if anything, but she's never going to become a bad guy.

I've noticed when AT's trying to be serious, but soften it with humor, it's rarely funny, but when it's genuinely trying to be funny, it's usually pretty funny. With PB it feels like they're just playing the whole thing for laughs.

poorwill - 2012-10-21

She's just a complicated character, you ninnies. Goliad was just a blank slate - she was corrupted by the clumsy efforts of Finn and (especially) Jake. She's shown herself to be pretty decent and even heroic on numerous occasions.

Bort - 2012-10-21

It's sort of a stock thing in fairy tales that kings and queens issue the odd unreasonable decree. They can't all be Henry the Fifth (the Shakespeare version).

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-10-21

I think her character is great because she isn't trying to be amoral, but her attempts at bettering the world wind up with often horrible side effects. She isn't a bad person. She just does things that wind up hurting those around her due to her search for knowledge.

I think it's remarkably true to life that she manages to act so much like a real leader in that she cares about those she rules but she doesn't always do things that are necessarily in everyone's best interests.

fluffy - 2013-01-03

Counterpoint: the scene in "The Lich" where she's butchering cute little aquarium dudes in a detached, almost fugue-state way, reassembling them into unspeakable horrors while completely indifferent to anything that she's doing.

poorwill - 2012-10-19

Cool ep.

Old_Zircon - 2012-10-19

I feel like seasons 3 and 4 (especially 3) were less consistentl than season 2 (some of them get kind of overly didactic) but when they're on they're VERY good.

poorwill - 2012-10-21

Really don't get this. Season 2 was easily the worst for me with by far the most dud episodes and the fewest high points.

Nominal - 2016-05-06

Yup. Season 2 sucked. It all came off more like Adventure Time Tumblr fanfic than actual Adventure Time.

A lot of that was Marceline. She's a textbook sociopath but it's obvious someone in the writing room considers her the perfect woman.

Kabbage - 2012-10-19

God, Lemongrab totally does have Aspergers, doesn't he.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-10-20

I hope I get the time to watch more of this show some day.

Cube - 2012-10-20

Lemongrab's voice is very, VERY irritating if you have to listen to it for a while.
