Would, but I'm not sure how much impossibly harder it is for any of those groups of people to get an ID card than it is to register to vote in the first place.

Grandmaster Funk - 2012-09-22

Why are people so upset about having their votes suppressed? If poors really want to vote, they should just pay their poll tax and jump through additional hoops for no reason.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-09-22

This year, I had to renew my driver's license under tough new laws designed to crack down on the nefarious illegal Mexicans sneaking in and driving around all willy-nilly.

I needed a birth certificate. My original may be gone forever. It could be buried in my parents' storage unit or possibly they left it with one of my grandparents' for safekeeping but there's no telling where it is in that case. I had to pay over 0 for a new copy as well as provide a whole bunch of paperwork and other proof of identity to get it.

In addition to the birth certificate, I had to produce all sorts of proof of residence which involved having friends & family to vouch for me and got their names on the record, too.

And then there was going to two different government agencies during their hours of operation, i.e. the same hours most people are working at their own jobs. I am lucky enough to have a job that allows me to take time off for such matters. Most people aren't that lucky. Then there's the fee I had to pay for the license, itself.

It was a major investment of time and money. People shouldn't have to jump through those sorts of hoops to exercise an inalienable right.

Fraud at the polls is a bullshit argument. To pull it off, you would need THOUSANDS of people voting fraudulently multiple times at multiple polling places. Voter ID laws are about suppressing certain demographics.

Callamon - 2012-09-22

Or Binro you could be like the 99.999% of the rest of us and not lose the most important document you own.

misterbuns - 2012-09-22

You should have kept that star up your ass.

Anaxagoras - 2012-09-22

99.9999%? That's very exact. What methodology did you use to arrive at that number?

Gmork - 2012-09-22

1 star = i disagree but am too inelegant to say why (mostly because im wrong)

Blue - 2012-09-22

Nobody's even claiming levels of voter fraud that aren't dwarfed by the number of legitimate voters that won't be able to vote.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-09-22

Callamon - because it's always up to us where our birth certificate is? What if our parents or grandparents misplace it or don't give it to us?

Also, you suck for one starring this.

And the rich need to be eradicated like the vermin rats they are. I thought I'd throw that in for good measure.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-09-22

@ Callamon:

My family had to move around a lot while my dad looked for work. No sooner would we get settled in than the company he'd found a job with would "downsize" and he'd have to go hunting again.

Mom tried to keep track of our important papers & documents, but it was difficult.

Shoebox Joe - 2012-09-23

I pretty much had the same problem as Binro, except I had a certificate for which we thought was a birth certificate. But it was actually a form for correcting my middle name that got signed and approved but never turned in.

Yeah, one phantom star for Callamon.

The only thing I have against this video is the state ID. but I think people relate to ID = Driver's license that they don't bother until they're able to drive or don't get one at all due to being unable/not interested in driving/drinking.

I wouldn't be surprised if the reasoning used behind getting a State ID in this racket is "you haven't lived if you haven't shot a gun or drank a beer" rather than "if you're found by the police and can not present a valid ID." For the latter, it's sounding only if you were in the wrong spot at the wrong time. But I don't think anyone is going to get an ID when they know they won't throw bowling balls in the middle of a four lane expressway or even huck loogies off the bridge.

Shoebox Joe - 2012-09-23

Sorry guys, I have to get a state ID before I rob the liqour store with you guys.

Shoebox Joe - 2012-09-23

Hey, RP'ing is a common thing on the internet. Who wants to join in?

I am Rapheal, the ninja turtle but I'm wanting to try meth. But I need a state ID before I do.

Okay, I'm walking to the DMV, step step step step step.

Aelric - 2012-09-23

Callamon: My folks lost my birth certificate when I was like, 3. Obviously, I hadn't taken personal responsibility and relied on the government to give a handout photo ID. The sheer lazy, irresponsibility of my 3 year old self sickens me today. If I met myself back then, I'd beat the crap out of myself to teach me a lesson.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-09-23

Isn't it funny to think that it was the so-called "fiscally conservative", cut spending types that enacted all of these useless new rules that are costing the taxpayers so so much money?

chumbucket - 2012-09-23

Oh yeah, that birth certificate they hand to you when you are born on flimsy bureaucracy paper and tell you to keep all of your life, that one. Yeah...pretty much no one has that just sitting in their safe-keeping. Generally we end up having to go back to the bureaucracy that produces them to pay for another copy and try keeping that around the rest of our lives.

She's kind of annoying but has a point..or two.

Robin Kestrel - 2012-09-22

Chyron.

erratic - 2012-09-22

between this video and wikipedia, I learned two new terms today. Chyron and Black-Irish. thanks Sarah!

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-09-23

Khyron was my favorite Zentradi from Macross.

That guy - 2012-09-23

Paging Cena Mark

Unrelately, I hate Sarah Silverman as a comic; but not as a piece of ass.

Jane Error - 2012-09-23

Well done, though I don't think old people were going to vote for Obama.

Pillager - 2012-09-23

Thank Ryan for scaring them back to us.

The Mothership - 2020-11-28

Still would.
