EXCUSE ME but baboons travel in TROOPS and not PACKS!

Assuming this is any measure of their intelligence, it's going to be so awesome in a few more millennia when baboons finally start killing each other for religious reasons.

poorwill - 2012-09-08

Baboons are too smart to do that.

Maru - 2012-09-08

hurray!

kingarthur - 2012-09-08

Cooperation!

The Townleybomb - 2012-09-08

Dog treason!

Maru - 2012-09-08

what i love about baboons is that they don't even pretend a dog's tail is anything other than a handle.

CJH - 2012-09-08

maybe i am being unfair and basing this off of- oh i don't know- every other video of apes and monkeys that's online, but are we sure the baboon didn't drag that little dude off to rape him? i think those pups are sex slaves first and guard dogs second.

Sudan no1 - 2012-09-08

So like us.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-09-08

Kind of heartwarming, really.

Noober - 2012-09-09

This is a commercial documentary selling itself by just making up a narrative. The only facts they use to bolster their case, like ""these primates only groom family members", are all straight up lies.

This is just two videos. One of a baboon kidnapping a puppy and playing with it briefly before letting it go (it then immediately runs back in the direction of its mother). And then another video of baboons and dogs living in close proximity to one another in the context of free food at a garbage dump.

Noober - 2012-09-09

I will point out: This is not a phenomenon discussed in the literature, and the documentary filmmakers did not film for long enough to witness the event they are describing (ie: kidnapped dogs growing up). The only remaining explanation is that they made it up.

CJH - 2012-09-09

this doc has been out for a while- if what you say is true then there should be some outcry from the primatologist community as to it's validity. do you have any links to such? not that i doubt you, but i'm not actually going to search myself and i think it would help your argument.

Noober - 2012-09-09

Commercial nature documentaries occupy the same space on the academic hierarchy as, say, "Beakman's World", so if you expect links to journal articles debunking this fraud's claims then you're going to be disappointed. Maybe set your sights a little lower?

Maru - 2012-09-09

But feral dogs don't just hang out with other animals.

Noober - 2012-09-09

Uh... Do you know what a feral dog is?

Maru - 2012-09-09

They're wild dogs that form packs of other dogs. This isn't the Jungle Book. They don't chill out with monkeys and bears like it's normal.

And I entreaty the POE community to stop prefacing their replies to me with "Uh..." like some kind of valley girl.

Noober - 2012-09-09

Uh, no, sorry. The dogs in question are domesticated dogs which have "gone wild", like, in the sense that they live at the dump and feed off of human refuse. Colloquially one would call them "stray dogs".

Maru - 2012-09-09

So they hang out with baboons all day. QED.
