You know what drug kills the most people every year? Nicotine, and it's legal! Let's make all the drugs legal!

Old_Zircon - 2012-09-04

Everything he said is right, though.

I agree with the idea of legalizing pretty much every drug, but he built a massive contradiction right into what he was saying that I hadn't thought about before. How much worse would crack be if advertising agencies could work on promoting it?

Still not as bad as, say, big macs.

I'm tired of this issue ALWAYS being laid out in such stark terms. If you want to legalize heroin, that's a valid point of view, and better than what we're doing, but legalization is not the only alternative to an expensive, life-destroying, counter-productive "war on drugs". We could put more resources into treatment, eliminate draconian penalties for making a phone call, stop shooting down planes with families in them. Without the political will, even a good idea becomes a strawman to be used against making any changes at all.

My primary desire to legalize (and federally regulate) pretty much every drug you could name is only partially motivated by the damage it does to addicts.

Illegal drugs pump billions into black market economies. Drug money literally has Mexico teetering on the brink of failed state status, it's been funding Columbia's guerrilla Marxists for decades, and it wiped out an entire generation of economic advancement in some of America's working class urban centers. Drugs are dangerous, but illegal drugs are more dangerous than regulated and watchdogged drugs accountable to government control could ever hope to be. Legalizing drugs would actually make them safer for both users and the people forced to be in the presence of users (the rest of us), while simultaneously freezing the cashflow of everyone from Kim Jong-un's puppeteers to every corner boy in south central LA.
