I think this is the first time in years I've ever seen a clip of Ice-T where he's not yelling at or about a rapist.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2012-07-25

It is rare to find an unsubstatiated arguement that I so strongly support.
But there it is.

It's horseshit, though: turning your gun against "tyranny" (i.e., our government) is committing treason, which is the one crime specified in the Constitution. The penalty for treason is spelled out too: death.

And did you ever notice how the Second Amendment, and only the Second Amendment, starts out with an explanation of why the right exists ("a well-regulated militia etc")? Isn't it odd that they can identify freedom of the press without saying why it's needed, or the right to not incriminate one's self without describing the reason behind it. But in the case of the Second Amendment they went and spelled it out, because if they didn't, people would get all kinds of notions in their heads about overthrowing the government ... so the Second Amendment explicitly says that people may own guns so they can participate in militias, and well-regulated ones at that.

There is nothing in the Constitution, neither in the main work nor in the Amendments, to support the belief that gun ownership is intended as an escape valve on tyranny. Quite the opposite, in fact.

So how about those militias, huh? They were already proven to be an anachronism 200 years ago, in the War of 1812. Our first couple expeditions into Canada consisted of militias, and they were roundly defeated by the professional soldiers up north. It's only when we started sending professional soldiers ourselves that we stopped being defeated in humiliating fashion. So much for the noble militia being able to defend the United States from, well, much of anything.

There's the "right" and then there's the "competence". The two don't seem to meet often.

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-07-25

The genius of his argument is that for all intents and purposes, this is how the amendment is understand by a majority of people today. However, those people frame the discussion in an inherently vague manner, imagining some UN force lead by Nancy Pelosi who will "take their guns away" thus removing their "Freedom". What Ice-T does here is put the notion into very concrete terms, with practical implications. I often wonder why African Americans and Latinos do not join the NRA in droves, and assert their 2nd amendment rights using the rhetoric and tools the NRA espouses and provides. I think the discussion around guns in America would all of a sudden become a lot more sane and reasonable, don't you? And if not, well then, we get to see what gangs of heavily armed minorities can do to the local police forces with (presumably) the full support of the Republican Party.

memedumpster - 2012-07-25

The NRA would straight up reject a mass influx of minorities. Then, when they tried to form their own NRA, the government would scream Waco and send in the troops.

craptacular - 2012-07-25

land of the gun indeed.

lol what a guy

misterbuns - 2012-07-25

I love how he is flaunting his accent. I do this too when I am in the UK. I sort of get off on how American I sound and play it up unconsciously. Also Ice T is rad. Guns are rad. Five stars.

kingarthur - 2012-07-25

Ice-T is a conservative now?

kingarthur - 2012-07-25

I mean, I get this coming from the same guy that wrote "Cop Killer" as a protest song in the same way the Panthers would argue for gun ownership. However, Ice-T as a conservative is such an about face by him that I'd be really really disturbingly shocked were it true.

spikestoyiu - 2012-07-25

"On June 5, 2008, Ice-T jokingly stated that he would be voting for John McCain in the 2008 American elections. Ice-T also speculated that his past affiliation with Body Count could hurt Barack Obama's chances if he endorsed him, so he'd choose instead to ruin John McCain's campaign by saying he supported him."

So I doubt it.

Monty Cantsin - 2012-07-25

He likes guns, therefore he's a conservative. What don't you understand about politics?

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-07-25

people who are pro-guns = bad guys. republicans = bad guys. ergo, Ice-T = bad guy republican.

huh i wonder why political discussion in the western world is becoming so increasingly useless

Simillion - 2012-07-25

He goes from saying that guns are our last defense against tyranny to saying that America was founded by the gun, that there is no justice on stolen land..

This is the kind of inherently insane contradiction that a nation of crude, gun-wielding barbarians should come to accept as casually as he does.

I'm sure it's no coincidence that before I even turned on my computer today, I woke up thinking about what kind of body armor I should invest in. I think I've decided on a half-breastplate, something that swoops in at an angle to protect my heart, aorta, and one of my lungs from bullet injuries. Most other kinds of injuries could probably be addressed in an ER in due time. As for the head -- well, I don't want to look paranoid. Appearances..

Oh, and for when I get to be old enough, I should definitely invest in child-sized versions of those.

Does anyone know if synthetic spidersilk body armor is live yet? I really need some of that shit for when I go out to watch batman movies. lol.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-07-25

His character on Law & Order: SVU is a black republican police officer with a gay son. How wacky is that?
