It doesn't matter whether we hold Carl Switzer responsible for his bad behavior. Life held Carl responsible. I don't think he had much of a chance with an upbringing like that, with parents who lived off him but refused to parent him, pushing him into a career that was bound to make him a has-been before he was old enough to drive a car.

Alfalfa had a brother who was a also a rascal, though a less well known one. Harold died a remarkably similar death, but even worse, in 1967. In another dispute over a few dollars, Harold got the upper hand and killed the other guy. Afterward. he killed himself.

Somebody mentioned a couple of pranks he pulled that involved sharp objects. Both of those involved hospital visits and serious injuries. I think he was the kind of broken that you can't really cause with bad parenting or fix with good parenting.
