So at what point in production did this happen, I wonder.

Udderdude - 2012-05-15

The point when OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD

Meerkat - 2012-05-15

Not testing backups.

Five Stars For Evil.

FABIO - 2012-05-15

So who deleted it?

Xenocide - 2012-05-15

Evil clown.

American Standard - 2012-05-15

This is also what I am wondering.

stage - 2012-05-15

Someone with good taste...

Chancho - 2012-05-15

I was working on a Wii shovelware game and a programmer almost deleted an entire subversion repository in a similar way.

fedex - 2012-05-15

this is cute but I don't think she took home all the assets like models, textures, anim files, etc that they would need to actually recreate scenes from scratch.

Xenocide - 2012-05-15

Dammit, RM*, where were you when they were making Cars 2?

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2012-05-15

Where was it when they were making Cars 1?

badideasinaction - 2012-05-15

With Linux you can (painstakingly) recover just about anything off a hard drive because you can treat the entire drive as a file. Boss had his filesystem get completely fragged, recovered the source tree he needed by running "strings" against it and searching for the key things he needed. Would have been painful as hell, but doable. Still, sneakernet is a lot less painful.

Screwtape - 2012-05-15

So they kept all files in one dir? Or they somehow overrode the default behavior of rm to be recursive and *not* prompt?

I call bullshit.

Meerkat - 2012-05-15

I assume the details of rm -r were omitted because Bubba and Shirley Hoffsmith wouldn't care.

Bort - 2012-05-16

This was 1998 or so; I for one couldn't tell you whether Linux was civilized enough back then to put safeguards on dangerous commands. It could well be that some foolishly overconfident user removed the safeguards because he felt they were too restrictive.

So, she was able to bring copies home to her home computer via some mechanism (Zip cartridge / SparQ drive / CD-RW), but the reverse operation required transporting the home computer itself?

BiggerJ - 2012-05-16

Good news: There are probably Linux historians who would be able to tell you for sure.

Bad news: Linux historians probably exist.

biclops - 2012-05-16

alias RM*='rm -r *'

Potter - 2012-05-16

my partner just went through a similar situation after running over her laptop with her car, complete with zany hard rive "mounts" and a huge contract at stake. This will make her fell better.

Bort - 2012-05-16

I'm glad it worked out, but I'm sorry she lives in an episode of "The Office".
