The Mothership - 2012-04-06

I saw some of this show for the first time in a hotel room in San Jose the other day. it is a really, really stupid show. I got respect for the kids who build the Enterprise D and mathematical contraptions in minecraft, but this is just such a waste.

memedumpster - 2012-04-06

Mineskrimp.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-04-06

In what way is it stupid, out of curiosity? Do you think it's an unfaithful adaptation of the novels it's based on, you don't care for swords-n-sorcery, or... what?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-04-06

The show and books are mainly based upon various Medieval power struggles, such as the War of the Roses. He basically builds the characters to all view the world a different way through their storytelling, which is a really cool aspect and the POV's stand out in the fantasy novels I've read as being exceptionally well done.

The magic is pretty minimal so far. Allusion is more important at this point. It's a pretty smartly written show, even if you just dismiss the characters as all being cardboard chess pieces. I've heard that argument and could counter it by saying they all adapt a lot over each book and change considerably, but yeah getting back to the video...

I don't know what a minecraft is but these kids and their mindcarts. They sure do spend a lot of time on them. Now if you see a minecarp that looks good and goes into the details of Barsoom, please let me know and I'll get one of those mindscarfs right away.

BECAUSE I'M OLD AND DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS GET IT

theSnake - 2012-04-06

ur a fuckin retard if you dont like this show

peace

Gmork - 2012-04-06

For a moment I was absolutely convinced the Mothership was referring to seeing THIS video on a TV show, and made the assumption that the TV show was some G4 garbage about videogames that happened to showcase this minecraft video.

That's how good that show is, I was CONVINCED of a much more esoteric explanation before I ever considered that he's saying he doesnt like Game of Thrones.

chairsforcheap - 2012-04-06

the books are awesome. The show is awesome. The Mothership is a retarded twat.

memedumpster - 2012-04-06

Okay, since you all are dogpiling the cooler poster here, Game of Thrones sucks. It's not exciting enough to be adventurous fantasy and not complex enough to be above mediocre political fantasy. It's mediocre, right in the middle of dull, and the only people who like it are those who never met a creative person who played D&D.

Gmork - 2012-04-06

Im afraid, memedumpster, I had THE BEST d&d group and history ever. Or for me, the most entertaining possible. In fact, the DM is a childhood friend who got a PHD in physics and is one of the smartest and most capable engineers I know, and his campaigns are ridiculously epic and thoroughly entertaining.

But i'm not going to try and change your opinion on Game of Thrones, just point out it has nothing to do with lack of imagination. The books, obviously, are better, but mostly I think people are just glad the show held up to their expectations. The characters aren't as one-dimensional as you purport them to be, with a few exceptions like Geoffrey. But I've known evil little shits in my own lifetime so hey, I suspend my disbelief.

The Mothership - 2012-04-06

wow, didn't expect the shitstorm. What I saw in this show was mediocre acting, cardboard cut-out characters, hackneyed writing and a half-assed attempt at romantic medievalism akin to Xena Warrior Princess but with the sex more explicit. As a fantasy lover who is also a professor of medieval history - as well as one who is aware of how good shows can be on HBO (Wire) - I was severely disappointed.

Game of Thrones is overrated twaddle.

Hooker - 2012-04-06

I've read the first four books and watched the first season of the show. I would say my enthusiasm for the series is mild or worse.

You don't _like_ the show. Which is fine. My opinion is close to the same. But the claims you make about the show aren't about preference, and they're wrong. The problem is probably that, by your own admission, you saw "some" of the show. People are angry at you for shooting your mouth of about shit you have no reason to have an opinion on. The show is somewhat besides the point now.

Hooker - 2012-04-06

Also, speaking of quality, a spirit bulb to ROUS.

memedumpster - 2012-04-06

Let me add that the fans of the show now make me like it less.

memedumpster - 2012-04-06

I will say though that the opening credit sequence is really really cool, which works against the rest of the show.

FABIO - 2012-04-06

Memedumpster pretty much nailed it. Mothership discovers how rabidly angry GoT fans can get when you point out it isn't Shakespeare, or even Herbert.

Dune is a complex tale of medieval/sci-fi/fantasy political maneuvering. The Harkonnen gladiator games scene alone has about half a dozen intertwining power struggles going on.

Game of Thrones is barely above an NC-17 Dragonlance novel.

SPOILERS

I had to check online to see if the first book ended on Stark's death. There was so little actual plot in the first season that I assumed some producer arbitrarily set "Sean Bean dies" as the dramatic finale point and the writers had to cram in a ton of filler to pad the rest out. The entire season could have been done in 3 or 4 episodes tops.

The whole thing is full of redundant scenes that do nothing to advance the plot or reveal anything new. They literally spend almost 3 entire episodes on the king and Sean Bean on the road swapping old skirt-chasing stories. The story should have started with Sean Bean leaving his family and arriving at the capital in under 5 minutes.

So the whole political plot is the queen fucks her brother and her king thinks their son is his. The big mystery Sean Bean digs up is a genealogy books that says 3 generations of men in the king's family all had black hair (why the king himself cannot remember this is not clear). Sean Bean immediately concludes that the prince in the queen's incest child and gives her one day to clear out before the king kills her. The king just happens to die in a freak hunting accident that afternoon and wills Sean Bean to run things until the prince is old enough.

The queen jumps the gun and says the prince is king NOW. Sean Bean says "nuh uh". The queen says "nuh uh". The prince's father is revealed and no one cares. The soldiers - provided by the guy who told Sean Bean not to trust him - turn on Sean Bean. He shouldn't have trusted him!

So the whole intrigue of the first season was a book about hair color drawing a sketchy line to incest that nobody cares about anyway. The main character dies for adhering to two technicalities nobody cares about. A war breaks out over the prince taking power a couple years early. That's it.

It could have been decent if it was framed as how ludicrous the whole war was, or if the war itself was interesting. But the entire season is taken up by nothing but a pornographic mystery investigation that would have embarrassed Scooby Doo writers.

FABIO - 2012-04-06

another point on Dune: I think its popularity has a lot to do with being kind of a sci-fi nerd's introduction to conversational subtext. The thought narration underlines what is some smartly and subtlety veiled dialog as characters steer innocent conversation around deadly points. Take the scene with Paul's family trying to out Harkonnen agents during dinner.

Game of Thrones often tries this. What you get there is two characters figuratively eyeing the throne, literally eyeing the throne, warily eyeing each other, having the following conversation:

"Many have died to sit on that throne."

"Hmmm yes it is a very dangerous game to be playing one should be careful!"

Hooker - 2012-04-06

All those words talking about subtext and you managed to misread the ACTUAL TEXT of the plot.

Jericho - 2012-04-06

gay of thrones

Paracelsus - 2012-04-06

I'm with Mother on this one. Go without great for long enough and mediocre seems magnificent. Still, to each his own.

takewithfood - 2012-04-07

Game of Thrones is kinda crap, with the exception of Peter Dinklage. I want to see a spinoff show called Tyrion Lannister Talks Down To People. I would watch the fuck out of that.

Gmork - 2012-04-07

If you're going to put down GoT and uplift Dune you're an idiot and boring to boot. Tedious and intellectually unrewarding schlock. Proves without a doubt the merit of the expression: "Classics are books that people want read, but nobody wants to read."

Anyways i'm not some rabid "GoT fan" (funny how the only one who abbreviated it professes to hate it) just someone who wasn't sure about the show until he watched it. Mothership and meme need to stop worrying about what their smarmy intellectual friends might think about them liking a certain show for one second and be objective about it.

But they'll tell me they were being objective in a moment, i'm sure.

memedumpster - 2012-04-07

Gmork, all of my friends worship the asshole this show rises and sets from, I am the only dissenter, while they want this show to fill them up with really dumb babies. Personally, my favorite sci fi epic was Cities in Flight, but Dune is still way better than Skrimp of Thrones.

I've been watching the thread and I notice this kind of debate doesn't land the video more views than ones not having this kind of debate, so that's sad. I was hoping our nerdrage was marketable.

:(

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2012-04-10

Five stars for The Mothership pulling off the troll post of 2012.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-11-28

Oh look everyone. Yet another PoETV poster has decided that a universally beloved and critically acclaimed serialized television drama is beneath them. Not that they don't personally enjoy it because it doesn't click with them, but that their vast intellect sees through it for the pandering garbage it is.

If you want to see REAL storytelling, let me educate you on a little show called Batman: The Animated Series. . .

chairsforcheap - 2012-04-06

and Gmork the exact same thing happened to me, I took a double-take

chairsforcheap - 2012-04-06

are you high

Gmork - 2012-04-06

very

Binro the Heretic - 2012-04-06

I've never read the books. I'm lukewarm on the TV series, but I do love me some epic Minecraft builds.
