Arsène Lupin was the main character in a series of books about a gentleman thief, who lived about 100 years ago. Arsène was so good at what he did he would announce his crimes before hand to his intended victims. Lupin III is his grandson who travels the world with a team of three companions, committing spectacular crimes that never quite work out. There's Daisuke Jigen the sharp shooter with the beard and hat, Goemon Ishikawa XIII the samurai with sword that can cut anything and femme fatale Fujiko Mine, who is featured in this video. Inspector Koichi Zenigata, the guy in the trench coat, chases them all over the world and just as they never quite managed to pull of their crimes, Zenigata never quite manages to keep the four of them in jail for any significant length of time.

There was a early 1970s TV series with just a few episodes, half of which were done by Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, Arrietty) as more of an action series. Later came a late 1970s, slapstick, action-comedy series with over 150 episodes. Most everyone here posting comments is hoping for less goofy comedy and more dramatic action.

Imagine James Bond, now imagine him as a chaotic neutral rogue and slightly more of a date rapist, and then give him a sense of humor.

It's a cartoon/manga series about a pack of three professional thieves and a femme fatale. The chick and the thieves constantly work together on big heists, with one side always looking to screw the other. It's 60's-70's flat graphic style with a play on that era's Western, Spy and Adventure genres. Most of us nerd out over it because the concept is pretty timeless post 70's...and it's one of the few things in pop culture to avoid becoming completely ruined and soul-less.

Cowboy Bebop was partially a homage to this series, if that helps you form a clearer picture.
