I love you Zircon, I had forgotten all about this! I used to have a set of this as a kid.

When these first came out, I spent some of my hard-earned lawn mowing dollars on a set. They were insanely expensive and had very few parts in each kit. They were sold in deceptively large boxes, but the parts were packed in white vacuum-formed plastic trays with individual compartments for each part. The compartments were spread far apart.

They weren't very versatile and I could only build three things with the kit I got. They could be used to make a car, a tractor or a "walker". The "walker" walked by alternating resting on its stomach and standing on four legs. After about a year, the clear capsules turned a brownish yellow.

I should have gotten more Lego Technic sets instead.

This is exactly how I remember my kit, too. It was awesome at first, but you couldn't actually do that many things with it. Some of my friends had several kits, but even with more stuff all you could really do is just make bigger versions of the same things with superfluous parts coming out of everywhere. Nothing could beat Lego.

Stars for nostalgia, though.

LEGO or GTFO.

About the coolest thing I ever did with mine was wire the two motorized capsules together and rig one up to act as the generator for the other. I'd wrap a bunch of turns of string around the shaft end of one of the motors and pull. The other motor would spin. You could change the direction of spin by switching the polarity.

Oh, and it taught me about planetary gears. So, there's that.

My brother had several of the smaller sets over the years. The biggest one I remember must have been the middle-of-the-road kit, which had the propeller and yellow buoy things, allowing you to build a motorboat. It didn't move around very well, but it was still awesome.

chumbucket - 2012-03-25

While my grandmother worked at a toy store I used to get a steady stream of this stuff. Loved it. But the motors and gears made a heck of a racket.

glasseye - 2012-03-25

These were fun, if only for the flotation buoys.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-03-25

I had these and they were as amazing as they look.

memedumpster - 2012-03-25

I had some of these, they came in a big shoddy box from a thrift store and were random parts. They were fun.

I just realized how crushingly sad it is that toy companies used to compete to see who had the best "make stuff with our stuff" toys. Now, I'm pretty sure most college students in America couldn't separate two tightly stuck LEGOs if there was a gun to their head.

"What are you doing in there, son?"

"Uh, nothing, Dad!"

"You aren't creating and controlling the future, are you?"

"DON'T COME IN!"

MrBuddy - 2012-03-25

I got one of these for Christmas. There wasn't much in the set so I probably got the lowest end kit. For me it turned out to be the right thing at the right age. Because there were few parts I wasn't focused on trying to build the most elaborate object, instead I was reading the booklet on how gears worked. To this day most of what I know about gears comes from that set. One of the best things I got as a kid.

Old_Zircon - 2012-03-26

Exactly, these weren't a sandbox building environment like Lego, they were an in depth education in gears for toddlers.

svraz - 2012-03-25

I have fond memories of this.

Tasso - 2013-05-10

I had that big robot. It was actually about the lamest set. It didn't really do anything.

The boat kit was the best one because it actually did boat stuff pretty well. You could also get a pump element so your ball-craft would tool around spraying water at people.
