According to a book on Japanese martial arts I used to have, Japanese samurai really did sometimes engage in fart duels. To support this fact, the book featured a number of Edo period engravings, depicting bug-eyed samurai farting and using paper fans to blow the gas at each other.

Whether these events actually happened, or were simply silly folktales, I haven't the foggiest. Information is scant online, so if any of you guys knows anything about this practice, please let me know.

They were images used largely to ridicule westerners, europeans, and other unpopular figures of the day. But you can see illustrated in the scroll nude men farting on eachother, holes blasted in shoji screens, and large fart battles.
