One thing I'm glad "Mrs. Doubtfire" did correctly: they didn't go with a mega-happy ending where the judge says, "if you were willing to go to these lengths for your kids, clearly you must be a highly reliable parent, this court sees no reason not to grant full shared custody". The last court scene had the judge suspending contact altogether pending a psychological evaluation, though the wife understood, and there was at least a breakthrough on that front. About as positive an ending as was possible given the circumstances.

A thing I despise about movies from the 80s is that they went for the mega-happy endings a little too often, and while happy endings are good, sometimes they took it too far. In "Back to the Future" they ended up enslaving the guy who used to bully the dad, and that's a GOOD thing? Never mind that this is the guy who once tried to rape Mrs. McFly, and now you're giving him unfettered physical access to her as years of frustration accumulate and fester in him. That's really going to turn out well in "Back to the Future 4: Special Victims Unit".

Mrs. Doubtfire is serious business.

The movie ends the mother arranging to have the dad see the kids a few hours every day after school, and the dad also gets a children's television show where he continues dressing in granny drag. And it closes with a Very Special Episode narration about divorce.

I think the fake trailer shows pretty much how the whole situation would have seemed to an outsider, had it actually happened. I think the people who feel sympathetic to a guy who dresses up in a granny costume in order to stalk his kids are few and far between.

Are you telling me that movies are manipulative, Innocent Bystander?

Riskbreaker - 2011-12-12

Here i was thinking that this was another movie about how HILLLARRRIOUZ is to see a guy dressed as a woman.

Quad9Damage - 2011-12-12

To me the trailer is what "Mrs. Doubtfire" would be like if it were crossed with "One Hour Photo."

Consider this Bort: Fox put this out. If it had a happy ending, then they'd be condoning transvestitism (male to female = esp. bad). How could Fox News slam the newest pro-LBGT blockbuster when their own people put it out?

That said, I agree with Innocent Bystander.

Mrs Doubtfire came out in 1993, fyi.

Yep, kind of my point -- had the movie come out in, say, 1987 they would have done the mega-happy ending, where perhaps the judge would have additionally stipulated that Robin Williams gets to keep Pierce Brosnan as his personal servant.

It's a pet peeve of mine, maybe because I was a teenager in the 80s and so many movies back then went for unsatisfyingly shallow endings. Don't get me started on "Weird Science" or the remake of "It's a Good Life" in "Twilight Zone: the Movie"; I'll be bitching all day.

This works.

nidan - 2011-12-12

Nice use of Goblin (at least at the beginning).

Billy the Poet - 2011-12-12

Every movie Robin Williams has made since 1983 is a horror movie, except for the Fisher King and that one where he kills people.
