Madree? What are we going to do about these people?

FABIO - 2011-11-08

So to interview the world's most annoying people in the world's most annoying neighborhood, they got an interviewer worse than any of them.

"Artist boyfriend being supported by artist girlfriend being supported by lawyer daddy" was my favorite Williamsburg breed.

Fact: most hipster girls are cute (being the offspring of trophy wives) and always in the process of breaking up with their current wuss boyfriend. Cash in on it.

SweaterCollection - 2011-11-08

These interviews remind me of the interviews they do before starting the scene in those hyper-misogynistic hate-fuck pornos like facialabuse.

The hatred and contempt is palpable and gleeful, and while it may not be entirely misplaced, I still feel slightly disgusted with myself after having watched.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-11-08

the only way this could be more hipster is if they made it using a computer they found in the dumpster

baleen - 2011-11-08

yeah the one time a submission actually warrants the hipster tag...

baleen - 2011-11-08

But god do I miss seeing the most amazingly gorgeous women every 20 minutes.

Hank Friendly - 2011-11-08

you sure they arent mediocre looking women who have mastered the art of looking presentable by displaying captivating plumage? because in my experience, there are a couple of dingers, but for the most part its usually quite a mess when you get up close. Frumpy girls making themselves look hot(from a distance) is the williamsburg gold standard

spikestoyiu - 2011-11-08

The one video where the "hipster" tag would not make the submitter look like someone's embarrassing uncle.

love - 2011-11-08

I omitted the hipster tag to avoid the weird confusion/antagonism it seems to generate here. As someone who's been on the greenpoint/williamsburg line for over 2 decades, all I can say is that I find this video VERY cathartic.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-11-08

They look really nice at first, but then you find that they haven't showered in a week, don't shave their armpits, and don't wear deodorant because its doesn't fit their lifestyle.

La Loco - 2011-11-08

I agree with jetbin. Williamsburg girls look dirty to me, like they probably have harry, unwashed cooters.

minimalist - 2011-11-08

Harry Cooters, PI

FABIO - 2011-11-08

Yeah, their candidness is a double edged sword. On one hand, they never wear bras and think nothing of sitting in on poker night with their boyfriend's guy friends in nothing but their underwear, on the other hand their personal hygene is not only questionable but they also love to openly tell you all about it.

baleen - 2011-11-09

Whaaat. We're talking about a place that is one of the centers of the fashion and entertainment industry, on top of just normal New York filled with people from all over the place which has its own share of hotness. I have seen people there who are literally emblazoned in my memory, I can actually recall the moment I saw them on the street and feeling my jaw drop. Sure the fashion industry is shallow and you might hate "hipsters" as a subgroup of the world, but there's a lot of uniquely amazingly ugh disgustingly gorgeous people all over that part of New York and Manhattan. That's the truth, Ruth.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-11-08

So, they left the "recreating colonial America" angle behind?

misterbuns - 2011-11-08

Jamestown.

Hank Friendly - 2011-11-08

at the end of the day, even a pair of skinny jeans and a flat brim baseball cap is more comfortable than starched pantaloons and a tri-corner hat

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2011-11-08

I liked the interstitial ads and "IN YO FACE" editing and stuff!

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2011-11-08

Also its easy to feel superior in some way to people living off their rich parents (who are probably evil) but I dont see why its any better scraping a living working for the evil companies that their parents own.

notascientist - 2011-11-08

The proper response to these people is to forget they exist, not make stupid videos about them as a kind of weird hipster one-upmanship.

FABIO - 2011-11-08

Tell that to the natives whose neighborhood got priced out from them.

Hank Friendly - 2011-11-08

this is brimming with the perfect balance of good humor and true hatred.

I first became aware of the hipster around 2004. I had a couple of friends who were headed down that route, and we spent some time partying in williamsburg. I remember the time I spent there fondly enough, but eventually something began to gnaw at me; why are they all gravitating here? what the hell do they do? barely a one of them from anywhere remotely close, all tied to some vaguely coherent vocation, usually involving art, music, or lefty political organizations. A few worked pizza parlor type gigs. However, despite being generally vapid and insubstantial, I didnt really begrudge them existing. Williamsburg was kind of a shit neighborhood to begin with.

When they started to expand (or at least I became cognisant of it), all of that changed. Eventually, it got to the point where I could not go to the store when I was at my grandmas house (bay ridge) without seeing some smarmy dickhead in orange sunglasses and his skanky gf buying a case of PBR. While this alone is hardly a punishable offense, the hipsters were like fucking cockroaches. Scuttling around being a nuiscance. A fairly quiet area became routinely clogged with drunk idiots stumbling down the street or having loud pow-wows at all hours in front of the houses mommy and daddy rented for them. While I guess this is better than, say, MS-13 setting up a drug lab and shooting people on sight, I found it very aggravating.

The fact is, while the hipsters themselves are annoying, they are ultimately fairly innocuous. Dumb kids doing dumb shit. The real problem is that they are the first wave of gentrification, and they bring a subtle but unmistakable sleaziness with them. Eventually, older, richer people will follow, and they will proceed to develop and fuck up everything I like about the area I'm from. It really doesn't matter if they congregate in a place like williamsburg that is (was) full of shitty abandoned buildings and set up a commercially viable outpost. When they start moving into established areas, it sucks. It genuinely makes the places less nice to live in.

Anyways, thats my rant. I only get to go home once or twice a year at best so I don't really have much exposure to it any more. This video touched something off in me. I don't know that I ever properly articulated it before, or even that I did here, but shit, there you go.

chumbucket - 2011-11-08

Thanks Hank, you're OK.

baleen - 2011-11-09

"The real problem is that they are the first wave of gentrification" Yes sort of. Let me share my experience with neighborhoods I've been expelled from.

The first wave of gentrification are artists desperate to live in cheap places that are close to where they can work. The Bohemian lifestyle, as it were, is gone from the populated center of NYC, so you move somewhere as close as you can on the train line.

After the artists move into violent neighborhoods (Wmsburg in the 80s), the not-rich gays and the artistic stragglers come in and call it "up and coming" amongst themselves. Then the Creative Class moves in. These are people who work in advertising on the creative end, and publishing. They are not necessarily horrible people, they just don't want to live in the de-oxygenated yuppie neighborhoods or the really horrible I Will Mug You and Take Your Ipad and Fuck You neighborhoods.

After these people move in, the hood becomes Glamorous and real estate starts pushing it as the Place To Be. Then the Professionals movie in, desperate for slightly cheaper rent with a concomitant Cultural/Ethnic Reward. With these people come the Upper Echelon Of Gay Culture, who add an accent to neighborhoods that the traditional Jack Smith/John Waters gay populace abhors and ignores (they are displaced as well).

At this point the neighborhood is officially A Hip Place to Be.™

This is when Rich Kids who Are Hipsters With Parents In Real Estate start moving in. They are not to be confused with the Artists Who Started All This, but they might dress similarly, and this is where a lot of the confusion is.

Artists dress peculiarly a lot of times. Just because you are a struggling artist you are not a horrible drunk idiot, but since artists sometimes get drunk and become idiots, Rich Kids Who Are Hipsters With Parents In Real Estate want to be like them.

This isn't a unique or localized phenomenon. The tough mob-connected guys who lived there decades ago attracted Professional Middle Class Guys in Unions Who Pretend to Be Wise Guys. These guys were once as reviled as the Hipsters were, but they're mostly gone from that area now.

Hank Friendly - 2011-11-09

how does one get "expelled" from a neighborhood?

baleen - 2011-11-11

The rents go up and the atmosphere grows sour and loses all its original appeal.

I was literally given 30 days to clear out of my Greenpoint apartment. They demolished the building, then the economy tanked. The building was a skeleton for over 2 years, I heard.

Also I was REALLY DRUNK when I wrote the above post at 3am.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-11-08

I thought the title said "Williams Street Fashion" and was expecting the video to be about Adult Swim-themed clothing.
