To be fair, they are right. Jesus says in Matthew 15 that parents must kill their kids if they fail to 'honor' them. And he says just prior to that in the sermon on the mount, that such commandments and their punishments must be followed if a Christian is to enter heaven.

When I say right, I of course mean, 'sticking to the literal meaning of the Bible'. Not 'right in the head' or 'right above a pit full of ravenous honeybadgers for long if I had anything to say about it'.

When you are following a book written thousands of years ago by a bunch of crazy old guys, and using it as a way to guide your life, reason and logic have long gone outside the window.

Night Train to Mundo Fine - 2011-11-07

You're completely misinterpreting Matthew 15. Here's the quote (from the New American Standard)
1 Then some Pharisees and scribes *came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO [a]BE PUT TO DEATH.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been [b]given to God,” 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother[c].’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8 ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9 ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,
TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’”

The Pharisees are yelling at Jesus for not having his followers follow a tedious ritual. Jesus replies by saying that they routinely break a supposedly even more important law. The quote from Isaiah about "teaching as doctrines the precepts of men" suggests that Jesus does not condone killing rebellious sons. So too would the parable of the prodigal son, depending on your interpretation.

The people in this video are not christian. Few loud christians are.

The crazy capslocking isn't mine, by the way.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-11-07

Given how often the Bible moralizes, and the amount of violence in the OT, it's kind of surprising how little mention there is of savagely beating your kids. The general vibe is to not neglect them.

I'm willing to bet that if these people got caught murdering their daughter in ancient Israel, they wouldn't have been given the courtesy of a fair trial.

IrishWhiskey - 2011-11-08

This isn't really the place for a prolonged discussion, which is unfortunate, but I'll add that the passage goes on to specify that those commandments pertaining to actions and words are binding, while only those pertaining to ritual and diet are not. And it seems likely from a plain reading that his Isiah quote refers to those dietary commandments which is he is telling them no longer apply, not the behavioral commandments which he reaffirms. I'll keep in mind what you said when I reread my annotated Bible though, so thanks.

I think it's important to note these people are Christians. Just Christians who are shitty people. To say otherwise suggests that a Christian who acts badly reflects poorly on the faith, whereas noting that people can be good or bad while still accepting the story of Jesus as fact, suggests their behavior is their own responsibility, not the faiths.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-11-08

God is the ultimate all-caps typing grandpa.

HEY GUYS, YHWH AGAIN. PRETTY SURE I TOLD YOU ALL TO STOP EATING SHELLFISH, BUT MAYBE I FORGOT. SO YEAH, DON'T DO IT. JESUS SNUCK INTO THE WORKSHOP ONE NIGHT WHILE I WAS SLEEPING AND MADE 'EM, THE LITTLE BRAT.

YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY, "SPARE THE ROD" OR SOMETHING... THEY DON'T? OH. YOU SHOULD START SAYING IT.

(PS... TAKE IT EASY WITH THE GAY SEX, IT CREEPS ME OUT)

Night Train to Mundo Fine - 2011-11-08

I did read on, to the part where he talks about what "defiles the man." However, I don't see anything there that would suggest killing as a punishment, simply that disrespecting parents is a sin. I'll have to read it again, too.

As for the Christian comment... I didn't mean that literally. Of course they're Christians. I'm just ticked off at all these people who dwell on the most violent parts of the conquest stories and completely forget the bit about forgiveness, and turning the other cheek, and loving each other. I suppose most die-hard fans end up hating sequels.

Randroid - 2011-11-08

YOU PEOPLE ARE THE REASON GOD DOESNT TALK TO US ANYMORE

takewithfood - 2011-11-08

Jesus was just changing the subject away from why he and his friends don't wash their hands before they eat.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-11-08

I've never understood the whole "our supreme being will be miffed to the utmost if we type his name with all the vowels intact."

Come on, people: Yahweh. God. Jehovah.

Seriously, if your fairy tale includes an omnipotent, omnipresent being who created a universe as complicated as this one, how would such a deity manage to take offense at its alleged name being written in a language that didn't exist for thousands of years after the creation of its religion (skipping the whole "where was said religion for all the millions of years before")?

Cena_mark - 2011-11-08

SteamPowered, Dinosaurs didn't go to church, silly.

EvilHomer - 2011-11-07

BONK!

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-11-07

You're not a good parents unless you HATE WOLVES!

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-11-07

Stay classy.

Nikon - 2011-11-08

I don't hate wolves, but I hate furries that dress up as them. Or other animals.

Come to think of it, I hate furries in general.

TheOtherCapnS - 2011-11-07

Leaving my house right now, picking up a few things, driving the eight hours to these "people's" farm outside of Memphis, setting fire to every building on the property, and then kneecapping them as they run out of their house so they can later be beaten to death by someone much larger and stronger than either of them (me) would not solve a single thing.

Anaxagoras - 2011-11-08

"If you can train your horse and if you can train your dog, then you can train your children."

That quote is correct; you can train your children. But training your dog or horse by beating it is not a very effective way of training it.

What a bunch of sick, evil morons.

kingarthur - 2011-11-08

Clips like this remind me why I'm no longer a social worker in Mississippi. And no longer a social worker or therapist period.

themilkshark - 2011-11-08

I was spanked as a kid. It made me a sexual masochist.

joelkazoo - 2011-11-08

Evil shit. I wish only the worst on everyone involved.

Quad9Damage - 2011-11-08

Seven hours!? SEVEN FUCKING HOURS!?!?!?! Those assholes HAD to have known that would have killed the child. There's no way you can pulverize a child for SEVEN HOURS without planning to kill them.

Louis Armstrong - 2011-11-08

The first six hours were liars tears. They knew this.

Fuckers.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-11-08

Evil evil evil evil evil evil!

Cherry Pop Culture - 2011-11-09

Horrendous. You are not to harm kids. You are to care for them. I hope when people like this see the face of their God, they will feel the fear they inflicted on their young kids.

kingofthenothing - 2011-11-09

Pro-life Christians killing kids. There you have it.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-11-09

the kids were already born though, it's different

Robin Kestrel - 2011-11-09

Who wants to bet that Michael Pearl has at some point sexually abused a child, as well? With his wife's complicity?
