I grew up in Los Angeles. My mom and her family and most of the people I knew in high school currently live in Oklahoma. My mom called me and told me there was an earthquake last night, and then I went on facebook and everyone was freaking out saying it was sooooo scary and they didn't know what to do and all is lost etc.

Turns out it was all of a 3.0 magnitude. lol okies.

Prickly Pete - 2011-11-06

5.6, you fuck. I live here.

baleen - 2011-11-06

5.6 is still pretty pathetic. Besides it's probably just a little good ole' boy frackin.

simon666 - 2011-11-06

There's not a lot of oil left that isn't coming out of the ground as mostly water in Oklahoma, and it's likely to get what's left in some fields people are having to pump water in to expel the oil.

simon666 - 2011-11-06

Though, the jury is out: http://earthandindustry.com/2011/11/oklahoma-earthquake-linked-to- fracking/

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-11-06

Haha, 5.6 is still NOTHING. Fuck you and the shitty nature-pussy state you live in.

P.S. I love you too.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-11-07

Keeping in mind that few, if any, buildings in OK are designed to withstand earthquakes. After all, a foot of snow is nothing... unless you live somewhere like SoCal or Georgia that doesn't get the stuff.

It's all relative.

simon666 - 2011-11-06

I like this guy's attitude.

Ranma X. - 2011-11-06

Earthquake? Whatever, OSU fucking won this week!

Mother_Puncher - 2011-11-06

What a great reaction. He seems like a nice guy.

Anaxagoras - 2011-11-06

Yeah. Sure he is. Ask him what he thinks of the gays, or of the poor, or of women's rights, or any of the other issues where Oklahoma is 100 years behind the times.

I wrestle a lot with that: how can you be a decent person while still being in favor of indecent things? I don't know if it's a complete answer, but I'm starting to think it's largely a tribal thing: people still retain these evolutionary impulses to 1) protect the tribe and 2) distrust outsiders, and your politics and worldview are strongly tied to how strong these impulses are in you. Liberals can't understand conservatives at all because they just don't feel the tribal thing, even when conservatives tell them point-blank that they're about "respect for tradition" and "the candidate you'd want to drink a beer with": it's all about being a member of the tribe and following its customs. Liberals are more likely to be talking about well-crafted public policy that benefits a large number of demographics, and all conservatives are hearing is that the liberals aren't trying to protect the tribe, and in fact are trying to dilute the tribe's power.

The Tea Party almost makes sense when framed that way: even if the Republicans and the Koch brothers of the world aren't really benefiting the Baggers, at least they're part of the same tribe, and if you won't pick up a femur and protect your tribe, what good are you? Even if the outsiders want to give you a job and better access to health care, it doesn't matter; they're still outsiders.

(By the way, this isn't just me pulling dumb ideas out of my ass. I mean, it's that, but I've also talked to former conservatives who say this sounds and feels about right to them.)

OWS is doing two things very, very right: it's trying to reframe the debate so that the 1% are the outsiders, and it's being persistent enough that even conservatives who hate what they're up to are forced to speak in terms of 99% / 1%. Even if OWS were to fold today, the 99% / 1% model is still out there, and it's not a notion that can easily be extinguished.

baleen - 2011-11-07

The Kochs have framed the discussion thusly: You have lots of oil and gas under your house. The EPA wants to stop you from getting it. The Liberal/EPA conspiracy consists of a bunch of hypocrites who drive nice cars and keep their homes warm in the winter yet don't want you to have jobs in the oil & gas business because it satisfies their sense of ecological purity, yet they are willing to spend your tax dollars on welfare for people in the ghetto which they think is more important.

This is what I've been able to extract from the TP groups I'm a member of on Facebook.

I agree with your last paragraph Bort. I just had an argument with an investment banker from Chicago. He agrees with "what OWS is about" he has just created a mythology around what caused the recession and what is stopping jobs from being created (he thinks Dodd-Frank is part of the problem). So he isn't able to unleash his vitriol because he knows on some level his friends were part of the problem.

The mainpage thumbnail makes it look like Rorschach is behind him. Does anyone else see it? Because I can't unsee it.

Strange, all I'm getting is a picture of my mother stealing my penis.

I'm delighted to see the return of Screaming Frog Week.
