I was fortunate to meet Zizek during my junior year in college. He was really easy going and not at all pretentious. It was interesting too because he was so much more interested to talk to the students than the stuffy old tenured philosophy professors that invited him. All in all it was a good experience, and I'll never forget his unique voice. He was really self-deprecating too, which was really funny for me at the time.

Five for his critique of capitalist and communist fundamentalism alone.

baleen - 2011-08-14

I fucking love this man. I spent a couple years hating him, now I have caved and I just love him. Love. LOVE. LOVE YOU SLAVOJ.

baleen - 2011-08-14

"Love the shit of your culture."

poorwill - 2011-08-14

What brought you around? Because I am knee-deep in the hate phase and I am having a pretty good time.

Riskbreaker - 2011-08-13

A well spoken individual, but capitalism is our way of life, flaws and everything. Unless we all go back to live in caves we will have to deal with the ups and downs of this system. If you prefer a socio-communist system by all means go to one of the current countries having such systems. Just don't expect to enjoy your stay there.

Collaborator!

Gommorrah - 2011-08-13

lmao

Gommorrah - 2011-08-13

"capitalism is the system of economics that has existed since caveman times" - a person who feels as though his opinion needed to be expressed

augias - 2011-08-13

I was in Vienna during spring and it was breathtaking. We should all follow this advice.

Abstract Fainter - 2011-08-13

Riskbreaker, Burnov is poetv's dumbshit king. You don't want the title, do you?

Abstract Fainter - 2011-08-13

Also, welcome back Gommorrah.

baleen - 2011-08-14

Riskbreaker, you have truly broken some risks. You have lived up to your risk breaking name.

DerangedGoblin - 2011-08-13

Five because I love this man. Ten because of "It's easy to say exit strategy."

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-08-13

I've never heard of the guy, but thanks POETV for the introduction. It almost makes up for Chris Chan. Almost.

Void 71 - 2011-08-13

This is my introduction to Zizek and I'm impressed.

I absolutely agree that mainstream leftism has focused too narrowly on social issues, which has created a division among leftists and given fuel to the right wing populism we see sweeping America. This, along with the fear of being called Socialists, is what has prevented the mainstream left from addressing real class concerns and why the 'more radical dissent' has either come from the right or been funneled back to the right via the Tea Party.

His conclusion is that 20th century state socialism isn't the answer and that 'popular mobilization outside the state and the market' is required. This seems like a nice way of saying we're fucked because there's no evidence that a 'revitalized, more radical left' exists in sufficient numbers to start a genuine revolution that will actually take hold in a country like America.

memedumpster - 2011-08-13

Build the guillotines and they will come.

Burnov - 2011-08-13

Jesus Christ, he sounds like Eek the cat's slavic alcoholic cousin.

poorwill - 2011-08-13

Slavoj Zizek is kind of a dick.

gmol - 2011-08-14

Does anyone associate chocolate with constipation?

Otherwise, I like this guy.

thirteen3seven - 2011-08-19

The argument is clarified in one of his books. Chocolate is an unhealthy sweet, and unhealthy sweets lead to digestive problems, such as constipation. A chocolate laxative, then, is ironic because the solution to the symptom uses the same root cause. The same goes for fixing the financial crisis through capitalistic means.

I'm currently in the middle of "First as Tragedy, Then as Farce," and most of the content here is taken from that book. It's still nice to see it reworded, because he can be deliberately obtuse in his writing. Five stars for Zizek anyway.

gmol - 2011-08-21

I think that I understood the juxtaposition with the premise that chocolate (or other sweets) can induce constipation.

I've never had that association with chocolate or sweets (at least anymore than with any other food); is it just me?

I still don't understand what he is referring to in the 'oil' statement.

gmol - 2011-08-14

What is is he talking about when he refers to the 'gigantic' ecological catastrophe that was responsible for oil reserves?

Most biomass today is microbial and plant, what is scary about a buildup over many years and through many catastrophes?

wtf japan - 2011-08-14

Zizeck is not a ruthless critic of anything. Neither is Marx, for that matter.

No, I won't explain myself.
