Its hard to say which is more idiotic, cheering over the S&P credit downgrade, or trying to attribute it to such a marginal bloc of voters.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-08-08

Well, they voted some of the people that took our debt debate into a 6 month shouting match. The compromise they came to could have been reached in the first week, but it took six months because the people they elected acted like childish imbeciles and kept walking away from talks.

Burnov - 2011-08-08

I'll be honest I believe the United States has kind of worked itself into this hole and it simply won't be fixed until some of these problems are addressed.

Inevitably you guys will have to lie in the bed you've made before lessons are learned and your economy can mend itself, however its something of a bitter pill to swallow, and I certainly see it as nothing to cheer about. I grew up during a really -really- bad recession in the 80s when the Mulrooney conservatives were in power up here in Canada. I know how bad a shitty economy can get.

I just don't see how ignoring the obvious problems in your economy and government can simply be overlooked in favor of perpetuating a scheme that is obviously unsustainable.

I know of a few people who work in the oilfield up here in Canada who were brought down to head up certain projects in the states and they said the business sense of those running things down there was beyond absurd.

He eventually left because he was expected to turn around a division that was hemorraging money, but the conditions involved expected him to do so without fundamentally changing anything.

Namely, that the workers that were being hired weren't allowed to be paid a reasonable wage, and thus there were many inefficient, unqualified, unmotivated workers, because the suits balked at the idea of spending good money on fewer qualified, motivated individuals.

His experiences stateside culminated into telling a room full of texas oilmen that the were a bunch of fucking crybabies who didn't know how to run a sustainable business.

He was shuffled off to work in India after that... Surprisingly not fired.

Much could be said about the entitlements expected throughout all aspects of american society. Eventually your economy had reached a breaking point. These are systemic problems that penetrate deep into american society, you can't blame it on any particular group.

I sincerely hope those individuals in charge realize that changes need to be made, although I fear that the U.S is now so politically polarized that this will result in nothing but a bunch of bitter finger pointing.

Tameriaen - 2011-08-08

While I agree with a number of your points, your post was sanctimonious.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-08-08

I imagine this audience smells like cheese. Cheese and loneliness.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-08-09

I got more of a B.O. from not moving out of your hoverround to hose yourself off for a few days sort of smell from it.

Squeamish - 2011-08-08

Fuck you, you stupid fucking white people. Fuck you. I hope the animals chew on your charred remains first after the earth burns, you stupid, ignorant, racist, cousin-fucking, spoon-fed asshole white people.

Burnov - 2011-08-08

I sincerely hope that was intended with a dose of irony of hipster-like proportions.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-08-08

The white people just called. They want their TVs back.

WitlessJ - 2011-08-08

Fucking peasants.

Sudan no1 - 2011-08-08

Lumpenproletariat, get it right.

Xenocide - 2011-08-08

They are objectivising us!

The Teabaggers seem to have reached a point where they think everyone is out to persecute them, and they seem really happy about this because in their ham-encrusted brains, being criticized is proof that they're right.

They've nursed this little persecution complex their whole fat, ignorant lives, taking every minor objection or negative comment ever directed at them as evidence of their own moral superiority. Now they get to indulge that kind of bullshit as a group, all while venting their hatred for that uppity darkie who thinks he's the president. Good times!

Bort - 2011-08-08

"Objectivizing us ... does that mean we're all John Galt?"

I count only one person there who doesn't look to be 60.

chumbucket - 2011-08-08

Xeno nailed it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

Not being criticized would also prove that they're right. It's how the cult member's mind works.

The reason why the downgrade happened was not only because the Republicans forced the crisis by refusing to rubber stamp the debt ceiling increase like they had a hundred times before, but because AT THE SAME TIME they refused to actually address the problem by adding revenues. Obama, who is supposed to be the big loser here, actually got the Republicans to back off quite a bit by threatening to actually solve the problem.

The minute these cocksuckers get back in the White House, they'll be running up the debt like they always do.

What REALLY makes me mad are the shit for brains who voted for Bush twice and decided around 2006-2007 that he wasn't "a true conservative". My head is about to explode.

FABIO - 2011-08-08

Madder than the fact that these people, to a man, were all in favor of trillion dollar wars but only NOW decide to get upset over deficits?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

It's just one of those crowds that's going to cheer anything that's announced in the right way, like a heavy metal concert, or kindergarten class.

"Hello, I'm John Holmes Motherfucker, and I'd just like to announce that the whole world is waiting for your generation to die so we can get on with our lives."

"YAAAAAAYYYY!!!!"

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

See if you can spot the guy who isn't over 60.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

Oops. Sorry Bort

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-08-09

Yeah, that guy is -only- in his late 40s/early 50s.

Void 71 - 2011-08-08

Axelrod and all of the other dipshits who are calling this a 'tea party downgrade' are just as useless as these people. In fact, they're worse because they they know full well that unchecked Capitalism is the problem. The tea party didn't gut our manufacturing base. They aren't the ones taking advantage of slave labor coming in from Mexico. They're simply reacting out of fear to what the Capitalists have done to this country and in the process they've been conned by the same people who caused the problem in the first place. You can blame the dupes for being gullible, but you can't blame them for destroying an entire economy over the course of 40 years.

jangbones - 2011-08-08

The Tea Party was an invention of the Republican Party, to direct racial and social fears of lower- and middle-class whites into supporting tax and regulatory policies that benefit the wealthy.

It was effective. A significant number of "Tea Party" republicans were elected, and they had an impact on the debt-ceiling agreement.

So calling it the Tea Party Downgrade is simplistic but accurate.

The wealthy will continue to change the environmental and economic policy of America until something really bad happens, like an enormous environmental disaster or a huge depression...oh wait, those things happened and the laws are still changing to benefit the rich.

Void 71 - 2011-08-08

They masterfully directed the legitimate fear and rage of the working class back to the same black hole that has been devouring them since the 1970s, but they didn't create the movement. They co-opted it, branded it and used it to put themselves back in power.

My contention is that guys like Axelrod are being purposefully simplistic because 1. they don't want to legitimize the complaints of the working class and 2. they don't want to admit that unfettered Capitalism is the cancer that is eating this country alive since they feed off that cancer every bit as much as the Republicans.

dead_cat - 2011-08-08

it'll keep happening until people bring back the guillotines.

memedumpster - 2011-08-08

Having experts step in and override the market in deciding which company exists and which doesn't is only capitalism in China. You're arguing for Communism.

Riskbreaker - 2011-08-08

I still don't understand what they think they are going to accomplish by acting like drama queens.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-08-08

American conservatives formed a religion based on greed and it's finally turned into a doomsday cult.

chairsforcheap - 2011-08-08

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

"The stock market is taking a huge dive in response to the downgrade."

YAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-08-08

Yaaah! for sure if you're shorting the market right now.

Care to call a bottom, Mr. Motherfucker? Frankly I was a little surprised we broke through 11000 on the Dow.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

Call it? Not me. I probably understand the rules of cricket better than I understand stocks. Okay, maybe not, but still...

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2011-08-08

"Most people your age die. Why don't you?"

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

Because Medicare is keeping them alive.

Stopheles - 2011-08-08

How will they get government subsidies for Rascal scooters NOW?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-08-08

Let's recap.

Clinton actually balanced the budget.

Republicans cheerfully ran up the deficit like madmen when they were in power and times were good,

Then they came down on Obama for spending to fix the mess that occurred on their watch.

They call Obama a Marxist, even though he is something of a deficit hawk himself. As a Senator, he voted against raising the debt ceiling, and one of his first acts as President was to fix the way the deficit is calculated to make it more honest, which is why we're now talking about trillions instead of billions.

And when they made a huge deal about raising the debt like they'd cheerfully voted for dozens of times, Obama actually offered to really do something about the problem, and they refused, because it meant plugging up tax loopholes to raise revenue. YES, THEY MADE A HUGE STINK ABOUT THE DEBT, THEN STOOD IN THE WAY OF A REALISTIC SOLUTION.

Now they're cheering the loss of US power and prestige.

These guys are some kinda patriots!
