What are the reasons a person would want to drink raw milk? Genuinely curious, all I've ever seen are a bunc hof bullshit claims about how it has "nutrients" that cure diseases.

I grew up on a farm and drank raw milk all the time. It tastes better than pasteurized milk.

I don't know about the hippie rawfoodist demographic that Venice Beach is littered with, but gourmet-types like raw milk because many of the complex flavors of milk tend to get lost in most forms of pasteurization, especially Ultra High Temperature Pasteurization. In fact, outside of the US, there are plenty of dairy products, such as young cheeses (aged 6 months or less), made with raw milk.

The main reason is that it contains lactase. Lactase is necessary to digest lactose. Pasteurizing milk destroys the bacteria that produce lactase and the lactase itself (or so they claim), and also removes vitamins from the milk (this is true). Hence, lactose intolerance becomes epidemic.

"Raw" milk is typically harmful because Cargill feeds their cows Chinese newspapers and apple cores instead of shit cows normally eat like Snickers and onion rings.

Raw milk does not contain a significant amount of lactase.

Vitamin loss is a bit of a canard. You do lose a lot of the vitamin C, but milk is not a primary source of vitamin C in human diets. You lose a little B12 and B1, A and D stick around.

While I'm not an expert, I'd guess that raw foods have a higher risk of containing diseases which are a health threat to the food supply in general.

They would counter by saying the chemicals used to grow, process and preserve food are just as bad or worse. At the end of the day, they feel good eating this way, let them eat this way.

The only people who would get sick from these foods are hippies, and the more of them who die, the better. Let them keep their milk.
