This is the first clip I've seen from this show where he isn't filled with curiosity and delight at the exotic wonders of America. He drives around enjoying the country more than any of us ever could, alternately awed, fascinated, amused, and respectful. Check out the clips where he's at a Nevada whorehouse, a Mendocino County firing range, and a college football game. He loves the hell out of this country.
I like Stephen Fry but I don't follow this "beautiful people are ugly" thing. OK, if they're noticeably vain, but what if they just like going to the beach?
What's ugly is not so much that they're beautiful, but what goes with it, namely, the attention-whoring and demanding to be worshiped. In many cases the road to beauty precludes intelligence, a sense of humor and a meaningful personality.
I'm struggling with it too, but I think what he means is that by being attractive people in this context, they become hollow props for the scene, just like the palm trees and the whatnots.
I find them grossly physically unattractive, for about the same reason I find Real Dolls and that one anime doll with the gyrating nipples unattractive. Most "beautiful people" are squarely in the uncanny valley.
