to be precise, this will rape your childhood memories and replace them with dead soulless automaton nightmares

baleen - 2011-07-25

there's no fucking way I'm seeing this movie.

EvilHomer - 2011-07-25

Bulbs for Xenocide's Haddock rant, but seriously guys, this movie looks awesome.

fedex - 2011-07-25

sorry, looks like the Final Fantasy Pirate Christmas Special to me

Xenocide - 2011-07-25

Man, if there were such a thing as the Final Fantasy Pirate Christmas Special, I would watch the shit out of it. It would be the worst thing anyone ever made, and I would watch it every year.

snothouse - 2011-07-25

Why couldn't he have made this with real actors, exactly?

garcet71283 - 2011-07-25

Beat me to it by a minute.

That being said, it looks like it could be a fun adventure film. Not enough movies made in that genre anymore.

StanleyPain - 2011-07-25

Originally Peter Jackson was producing/directing and wanted to use CG to make it look like a living Herge cartoon. Then when Spielberg took over because Jackson wanted to be hands-on with Hobbit, he turned into a Robert Zemeckis/uncanny valley nightmare.

Riskbreaker - 2011-07-25

No thanks bro.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2011-07-25

I can see this kind of technology looking good ten years from now, but this is like the first few awful experiments with sound in film

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-07-25

Does it look awful? Could you name any specific?

I'm not disagreeing or doubting you, I just don't see what's awful about it. But I've been known to have pretty low standards.

IrishWhiskey - 2011-07-25

The more they try and resemble real people, the creepier the effect. Everything in that trailer looked fine, except for TinTin.

The Thom(p)sons and Haddock are cartoon characters, while TinTin is a cartoon that appears to be wearing human skin awkwardly stretched over his face.

Hugo Gorilla - 2011-07-25

Yeah, that's what bothers me. Everyone looked like they did in comics (more or less) but Tintin. Tintin isn't abstract enough.

I have to admit that the fact they have Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thompson & Thompson pleases me to no end.

jyrque - 2011-07-25

I really don't see the uncanny valley in this movie. You're right though that Tintin looks off compared to the other caricature-like characters.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-07-25

Watching it again I see what you mean.

Still, no where near as bad as The Polar Express or Mars Needs Moms.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2011-07-25

Whatever system they're using just isn't up to animating more "human-like" faces correctly yet. I have no doubt that it will at some point, as this already looks better than previous efforts in this vein.

fedex - 2011-07-25

its way near the bottom of the uncanny valley, for sure

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-07-26

The biggest problem with this and so many other CGI films (aside from bad writing, crass attempts to cash in on existing IP, etc.) is that they take cartoons and give them human eyeballs. The Smurfs, Yogi Bear, etc. all look like some freakish horrors who didn't come out into the light until they'd captured a human, scooped out their eyes, and stuffed them into the previously vacant pits on their own faces.

There's an Asterix CGI film that doesn't repeat this mistake, and it doesn't look a quarter as disturbing as this.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-07-25

This actually looks like it could be fun. I miss the adventure genre.

I have to wonder what was wrong with using real people though...

dead_cat - 2011-07-25

If i can get over the creepiness of the characters, it looks like it'd be a fun movie.

Cena_mark - 2011-07-25

The only one who doesn't look creepy is the captain, and that's because he has a large cartoonish nose. I wish Speilberg realized the reason why most motion capture movies flop is because of the creepy uncanny valley they're in.
Tin Tin is a comic book, make him look a little more like it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-07-25

This looks promising.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-07-25

This is genuinely gaudy.

They tell us how great everything is going to be in the future, but apparently we have to put up with NOW to get there, and now is terrible.

Sundry - 2011-07-25

I think it looks fine.

Potrod - 2011-07-25

Creepy looking characters but it looks like it could make up for it in other ways.

Redford - 2011-07-25

To me the characters look perfectly fine in half the shots and weird and out of place in the other half.

Spit Spingola - 2011-07-25

Reminds me of that photoshopped realistic version of Mario.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-07-26

I have such fond memories of the comics as a child. This doesn't add anything but takes so so so so so so so much away.

Oktay - 2011-07-26

:)

Xenocide - 2011-07-26

Wow, they didn't even attempt to draw the new characters in Herge's style, did they? It almost looks like they cut TinTin out and pasted him into someone else's movie.

Rach_and_Roll - 2011-07-26

...why does TinTin sound like he has a British accent? Isn't he from Belgium?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-07-26

Like anyone would know what a Belgian accent sounded like. Not even the Belgians could tell you.

Gmork - 2012-12-27

It was a good movie but it felt like it ended abruptly at the midway/75% point in the story. It just kinda ends, with the promise of another adventure. But they didnt make it FEEL like the end, so it was kind of a "wait, it's over?" moment.
