As far as I can tell British television has been reduced to an endless purgatorial circle of identical quiz panel shows where the same two dozen comedians riff on each other and pretend to be friends until a day not far in the future when one of them snaps and strangles the host.

It's more just a platform for comedians to crack wise on each other or (in the case of the topical news shows) on events of the day. In case it escaped your notice, the scores really don't matter; it's the panel that's the real draw.

Shut it, they're way funnier than 75% of any American television.

Yeah, the Brits saw American game shows and correctly assumed they were some sort of joke, and decided to go about making them properly funny.

you should watch Mitchell's sketch show (That Mitchell And Web Look, available on netflex instant)

Chalkdust - 2011-06-15

note: Netflex streams way different content than Netflix

This is true, however it means I get to see Reginald D. Hunter flirting with Jo Brand at least once a year.

Plus as far as cheaply produced time filler TV goes, this shit is miles ahead of reality shows where fat people are made to ballroom dance in the amazon while decorating cakes and taking care of 8 kids or whatever the flaming fuck the next mutant bloody concept for a reality TV show is.

This kind of stuff reminds me a bit of the Match Game, one of the greatest American game shows.

@GravidWithHate

My friend and his wife recently came back from their honeymoon in Las Vegas. I don't know who here does touristy shit in Las Vegas, but MGM or possibly some other big production studio has one of their test screening locations there and they were able to watch one of the pre-pilot reality game show pitches.

The show they watched was a cross between American Pickers and The Amazing Race, where three teams of two people ran around town with a thousand dollars trying to buy the most valuable crap from garage sales and antique stores and the like, with the winners getting to keep everything that everyone bought.

Suffice to say, they both thought it was a stupid garbage concept that was only kept alive by the insane stereotypes that were cast as contestants. I don't remember them talking about the third couple, but one was a husband and wife straight out of a failed sitcom, while the other was a couple of dude-bro tough guys from New York.

To be fair, the UK has more than its fair share of crap TV, a lot of it reality shows or tabloid-style "entertainment." What people in any country who enjoy another country's TV offerings have to remember is that you're probably only aware of the better shows; if a show sucks, fewer people will bother to upload it somewhere.

Many have heard of "Doctor Who" or even (ugh) "Primeval." How many here saw an episode of "Bonekickers?"

They just went out of fashion here for some reason. Every so often Comedy Central will try out some panel-y late night thing, but nothing that's lasted.

Besides "Match Game," "What's My Line" is great. And I could imagine that in its day, with the panelists being better-known and TV in general being less *serious business*, it was probably a riot.

I think you basically have to want to be friends with the panel, and believe that they're having a genuinely good time. What I am saying is there should be a panel show with Louis C.K. and Bob Odenkirk, and I don't know, Saget? And they are not playing for points, but Ben Stein's money.

My grandmother collected bells, because she was blind and had a fancy for things that felt nice/made noise. I did this.
