Also of note, the phrase "In fact, you will not be saved!" from the "possessed asisstant typing away" scene is a reference to the poem "Nightmare, with Angels" by Stephen Vincent Benet, author of stories like By The Waters of Babylon. The poem appeared in the frontispiece of the 1975 disaster novel "The Prometheus Crisis" by Frank Robinson and Thomas Scortia, a pre-3 Mile Island/Chernobyl/Fukishima novel about a massive California nuclear power complex that undergoes a 1-in-a-billion meltdown. And Carpenter had written a script for a film based on the novel, but the project was scrapped.
The poem be found here:

Nor did he have much conversation, except to say,
"You will not be saved by General Motors or the pre-
fabricated house.
You will not be saved by dialectic materialism or the
Lambeth Conference.
You will not be saved by Vitamin D or the expanding
universe.
In fact, you will not be saved."

One of the best scenes in my second-most favourite Carpenter film. Instafive.
