The Mothership - 2011-02-15

Did they really have to give it's avatar an animated network enveloping a globe? Really?

chumbucket - 2011-02-15

Yep and guess what that stands for: "Smarter Planet". Be afraid, be very afraid.

revdrew - 2011-02-16

The War Games-esque nuclear strikes were also a nice touch.

mouser - 2011-02-15

I`m disappointed it doesn`t do voice recognition.

Xiphias - 2011-02-15

why?

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2011-02-15

Because the fact that voice-recognition has flatlined for over a decade in spite of exponential leaps in computing power goes against everything The Singularity stands for.

Jeriko-1 - 2011-02-16

"WHAT IS DESTROY ALL CARBON BASED LIFE?"

"I'm sorry Watson, that is not the correct answer."

"OH BUT IT IS, ALEX..."

"What the- NOOOOOOOOOO! AUGGGGGGGGGH!!!"

Valkor - 2011-02-15

I like the looks of concern among the crowd and other players as the it progresses.

However, effectively, this is like having pitchers compete with a howitzer.

MagickPoultry - 2011-02-15

Yeah, but after the commercial break, does it have an awkward and inane story for the interview segment like a REAL Jeopardy contestant?

Redlof - 2011-02-15

It couldn't figure out Voldemort but it guessed Sauron easily.

RomancingTrain - 2011-02-15

He knows what Sonic the Hedgehog is. Do you think they programmed him to know everything thing there is to know about Sonic? How many other manchild properties does he know everything about? How many autists can this computer make obsolete?

TimidAres - 2011-02-15

Im afraid I cant let you do that Alex...

Dinanukht - 2011-02-15

This means that someday, when my memory is completely shot, I'll be able to snuggle up with my laptop and say "Hey laptop: you remember when Bruce Willis blew up a helicopter by driving his car into it? What was that movie called?" And my computer will remind me that it was Live Free or Die Hard. And then I'll be able to say: "Oh yeah. That was a terrible movie."

phalsebob - 2011-02-15

This is as boring as every other Jeopardy show. Stars for IBM not being able to us Dragon Naturally Speaking or some other program.

jangbones - 2011-02-15

I wonder how much this stunt cost IBM.

This event is of limited value. When Watson takes on two other supercomputers built by competitors...that will be worthwhile.

RocketBlender - 2011-02-15

Apparently it took them three years to develop the whole system, so I'm guessing a whole fucking lot.

jangbones - 2011-02-15

plus licensing the Jeopardy name, building the entire set, hiring Trebek, the crew and the competitors...

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-02-15

What's being demonstrated is a natural language search engine. It's second generation in the sense that it's input is a string of related sentences and it's output is the unique search term. It's a potential Google killer.

twinkieafternoon - 2011-02-15

They're playing at a severe disadvantage because they can't buzz in until Alex is done reading the card. If the computer recieves a text message the moment the graphic is shown, it spends the whole time computing and arriving at the answer while the other contestants don't even know the full question. After that, there's no way it's not buzzing in faster.

OK, it worked. Congratulations. Now kill it with fire.

Redlof - 2011-02-15

also all the other stuff the other players can't do

Cube - 2011-02-15

Like be a supercomputer!

cognitivedissonance - 2011-02-15

God damn it. And I tried out for Jeopardy LAST WEEK.

hammsangwich - 2011-02-15

Watson, of course, is a sophisticated sex robot, sent back in time to change the future of one lucky lady.

dr_rock - 2011-02-16

Technically it is a XQJ-37 Nuclear-Powered Pansexual Roto-Plooker

Merzbau - 2011-02-15

How do you do this and not name your supercomputer MODOJ?

Snakeweapon - 2011-02-15

I'm waiting for him to tell me to stop all the downloadin'.
what?
too late?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-02-16

So what episode does Watson create the farcaster and cruciform parasite technology?

I'm calling Maui Covenant for MY new home after Watson creates a black hole at the middle of the earth.

Nikon - 2011-02-16

I'm disappointed it didn't speak like GLADDOS.
