Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-09-15

Well I'd rather he have fifteen seconds of fame than crazy ass mustache dude.

Quad9Damage - 2010-09-15

Yeah, I was a little disappointed. I thought a kid snatched up the Koran while whizzing by on a skateboard.

Chalkdust - 2010-09-15

"How can Religious Right David burn the Koran with such dirty ears?"

and then he does the sleight of hand to make it look like he pulled the Koran out of the guy's head

kingarthur - 2010-09-15

I like this guy. The Koran-snatcher I mean.

Simillion - 2010-09-15

Jacob Isom, Agent of God. (According to John Miller)

jangbones - 2010-09-15

dude's a communist, he redistributed the koran to the people

Asmodee - 2010-09-15

Douche bags all around. The preacher was preaching intolerance and hate, which is his right in America, and the wanna-be punk violated his first amendment rights to preach intolerance and hate. The problem here is we are having a cultural clash and nobody knows why. In America you do not have the right to not be offended. In the Middle East you can kill someone for offending you in certain ways. The two systems are fundamentally incompatible. We can be Americans, who allow free speech, even if we don't like it, or we can be Middle Easterners, who believe that religious beliefs trump all, freedom be damned. We can't be both, not that America isn't trying REALLY HARD to do just that right now.

The reality is that the mere THOUGHT that the original douche MIGHT burn the Quran was enough to set off riots in Afghanistan where they chant "Death to America". On the one hand you have Muslims saying, "Islam and terrorism are not the same thing", but on the other you have Muslims saying "One crazy preacher that few in America agree with speaks for all of America" and those Muslims who are whining about Americans thinking all Muslims are the same as terrorists have NOTHING to say about Muslims thinking all Americans are the same as individual crazy preachers.

The problem her is that they will NEVER recognize my right as an American in America to disrespect their beliefs. But just because foreigners do not respect or understand the rights we have in America in no way means we are obligated to give those rights up. You can't force Americans to respect their way of life because they are too ignorant and self absorbed to ever be expected to respect ours. Is purposely inciting them a good idea? No. All involved were dick wads. In America, however, being a dick wad is a right and it is not one I am willing to give up to placate a bunch of ignorant foreigners, or Americans, for that matter, who too closed minded to accept that theirs in not the only religion or too damned stupid to understand that true freedom isn't about just the things YOU want to be free to do, it's also about others having the freedom to do things you would NEVER do.

CharlesSmith - 2010-09-15

Yeah yeah yeah everyone's a douchebag.

You know what though? Fuck that preacher. All that stoner did was prevent him from making a pig-ignorant symbolic statement of hate. Stopping something like that is not "douchey" even if Reverend Hate Crime's "rights" were being "violated" (wait, is the first amendment supposed to protect you from private citizens or the government, I forgot. But then again I don't live in your country so I'm not expected to know this shit. You might want to look into it though.)

I'm sick of this idea that both sides of everything are equally wrong. Opposing senseless hate isn't wrong. Even if all that happened was Reverend Bigot got embarrassed, then only good came of this.

Vaidency - 2010-09-15

"We can be Americans, who allow free speech, even if we don't like it, or we can be Middle Easterners, who believe that religious beliefs trump all, freedom be damned."

There might actually be a third option. And maybe we should look for it.

Protecting speech and expression is laudable, but what this preacher was attempting was clearly an act of provocation, hate, divisiveness and bigotry aimed not only at foreigners but at a religious minority in his own country. I don't really see how it serves our society's interests to treat that as a sacred, untouchable right.

Cena_mark - 2010-09-15

5 Stars for that.

Cena_mark - 2010-09-15

Not for you, but for Asmodee. It is an ignorant statement, but it must be protect. That hipster denied the preacher his civil rights and stole his property.

CharlesSmith - 2010-09-15

That's not even the point Vaidency. If the government had stepped in and taken this man's Quran to stop him from burning it, THAT would be a violation of his civil rights, and THAT would be wrong. A private citizen doing so as his own counter-protest is merely petty theft merged with fantasticness.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-09-16

I was like dude you HAVE no civil rights!

Pacobird - 2010-11-01

The government did not take that preacher's Quran.

chumbucket - 2010-09-15
