A terrible cutscene from the new Metroid game (spoilers?):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkNVPWHaEPw

It is laughable that Samus would be so freaked out by the inevitable return of the easiest boss to kill in every Metroid game, but then I saw this speedrun and it looks like she doesn't deal very well with it in Super Metroid either.

fluffy - 2010-08-28

I could never beat him in Zero Mission, but yeah other than that he's kinda, durrrrr.

That cutscene is pretty ridiculous. I was KIND OF looking forward to Other M until I saw that. Now I'm not so sure.

fourthguy - 2010-08-29

I tag-teamed it with a friend last night. I liked it, but it's definitely not up to par with the rest of the series. The dialogue in particular is fucking awful, like it was written by a Japanese guy with only a very technical understanding of English.

It's also about as linear as Fusion. I'm personally okay with that, but I know a lot of people won't be.

RocketBlender - 2010-08-29

I'm afraid I'm one of those people. This was what I was worried about from the moment I heard 'Team Ninja.'

I really don't get why so many people were so excited about that. I mean, their batting average is like 50/50. Ninja Gaiden 1 was good, 2 was pretty bad, the DOA fighters ranged from good to average, and everything else they made, especially those volleyball games were complete garbage. They've never done anything that wasn't linear, and are known to want to throw a lot of unnecessary dialogue, cinematics, and 'backstory' into their titles, a bunch of stuff Metroid didn't need, and wasn't known for.

poorwill - 2010-08-29

All of that stuff is on the head of the director, Sakamoto, though - this is his vision, and it's pretty much expounding on Fusion's style. I blame Team Ninja for the hinky, plasticky graphics though.

The game seems like a long, earnest, creeeepy love letter from the creator to Metroid fans who are pretty much 'Thanks, but I don't like you in that way'. I've been spoiling myself for the parts I know will be painful to soften the blow when I play it - I've got it paid off in full.

RomancingTrain - 2010-08-29

Why do her clothes fall off? I mean I want a diegetic reason, I know the real reason is because Japanese videogame makers now hate strong female characters.

poorwill - 2010-08-29

I don't know. In the older games her clothes fall off when you:

*Get killed
* Beat the game really fast
*Enter a password
* In Zero Mission I think she takes them off and then just forgets to put it back on for some reason.

*In Smash Bros they fall off when she shoots a really big laser.

In Fusion they actually have to be surgically removed because ... I don't know.

Completely nonsensical and out of place emotional trauma doesn't seem like a real stretch, and Japanese game designers have always hated strong female characters.

RocketBlender - 2010-08-29

I still don't get why they felt she needed a 'beauty mark.' I'll admit, I've got this prepaid and am waiting to pick it up, I'm just trying to keep my expectations low.

The one thing I personally feel Metroid never needed was cinematics, action packed cutscenes, and more bullshit with Adam, which was easily the most awkward part of Fusion.

I still don't get why nintendo went with Team ninja though, or why people are all excited about it. They're not known for their gameplay so much as they are for being perverts.*

Wow, that cutscene is just terrible. This takes place after the SNES one, right? So that thing's come back, what, 7 times now?

On one last note: Jesus Christ, the youtube chatter on that trailer. It's horrible! Thisis why I stick to poe.

poorwill - 2010-08-29

At least she's not as bad as Alyx Vance in Half Life 2. Now there's an alternately-delicious-tough-cookie-and-helpless-damsel-in-distress -who-was-constantly-fawning-over-men.

RomancingTrain - 2010-08-29

Oh man, the story for Other M was written by the guy who directed all the 2d Metroid games so I'm pretty sure that if the Nes and SNES had allowed games to actually have stories he would have made all the old ones as ridiculous as this.

RocketBlender - 2010-08-29

Stop it. I want to think this is Team Ninja's fault. Then again, it's pretty easy to believe it was Nintendo's doing. They did feel the need to pad out Zelda with excessive amounts of story in the most recent ones.

Am I weird for wanting games to have less cinematic moments?I don't hate storytelling. I love a good book, movie, or TV series, but for some reason I just want games to shut the fuck up and let me shoot shit and explore.

RomancingTrain - 2010-08-29

There is nothing wrong with not wanting story in video games, there has never been a console game with a well-told story in it.

RocketBlender - 2010-08-29

Exactly! I mean, don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the plot in story driven games like EarthBound or Chrono Trigger, but if you tried to put that plot in any medium besides a game and it would be terrible, since playing it is the only thing keeping that story afloat.

But when it comes down to it, it's pretty unnecessary. Did I need to know that Samus shat herself and had flashbacks and started her period early when she saw Ridley? No, I just need to kick his ass, so fuck off cutscenes.

At least it's not as bad as Metal Gear. Fucking 15 minute intro to each boss, and congratulatory 10 minute guilt trip about how hard their life was afterward.

Louis Armstrong - 2010-08-29

I thought Ridley in Metriod Prime was tough. I mean yes you could beat him despite that fact that he just charged you, but that fight was intense.

Five for the speed run.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2010-08-29

Dammit guys, I was all excited about other m, now i know it's kinda lame. Oh well, I'm still gonna make my friend buy it.

Billie_Joe_Buttfuck - 2010-08-29

what the fuck is this nerd shit on the internet

The Mothership - 2010-08-29

Great, but for me Metroid II for Game Boy will always be the best.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2010-08-29

Thank you.

RocketBlender - 2010-08-29

I'll give you that one.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-08-29

I disagree, but I completely understand and respect your opinion.

memedumpster - 2010-08-29

I watched this in the hopper and was amazed at how fast an hour just shot by.

cognitivedissonance - 2010-08-29

As a kid, I hated Metroid because it was non-linear and I couldn't figure out what to do, but now as an adult, I kind of like just bumming around the planet like that.

I hate Metroid Primes, though. First Person Marble Madness.

Quad9Damage - 2010-08-29

I love Super Metroid speedrun videos. It's fun watching people do unbelievable things in one of my favorite games of all time.

I've even done a few speedruns myself, although I still clock in at least 2 hours if I get all the items. I wish I could get that speed ball trick down so I can skip the plant boss.

codehappy - 2010-08-29

This individual has the wall-jumping down pat. Impressive.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-08-29

I'm going to go on record as saying that Super Metroid has the best boss battle in SNES history.

RocketBlender - 2010-08-29

Which one? I always liked the boss of Maridia because you could fry him with the grapple.

bac - 2011-08-12

He glitches a couple of things but still fucking amazing.

FABIO - 2011-09-21

He didn't rescue the animals at the end =(
