New York's alright if you like rat infestations.
|
Crackula - 2010-06-02 Thank you for this

It's fucked up that even people who kill rats in New York City don't have job security.
|
CapnJesusHood - 2010-06-01 Don't be so narrow-minded. Sure a few humans lost their jobs. But the job market for rats is booming!

Fortunately, NYC mice long ago moved into stoves, forming their own Borg collective against the rats.

Say what you will, but the whole of New York City is cleaner than my local Taco Bell.
|
Broose182 - 2010-06-01
Pretty much everywhere it's gonna be rats.
|
Scynne - 2010-06-01 Then I won't need a plague!
|
MrBuddy - 2010-06-01 They say you're never more than 50 feet away from a rat and unless you're in an airplane or the 200th floor of the world's tallest building, I believe it.
There is a reason why there were so many Plague outbreaks in Europe 400 years ago. In those days Europe was dominated by Black/Roof/Tree rats (rattus rattus) which spread the disease. When the Brown/Ship/Sewer rat (rattus norvegicus), which don't spread Plague, arrived they chased the Black rats away and saved Europe. If you're a white person you owe your existence to that little animal that's digging around in your garbage can.
|
Camonk - 2010-06-01 That's awesome if true and not something you read on a cut-rate trivia website.
|
MrBuddy - 2010-06-02 "Brown rats are sometimes mistakenly thought to be a major reservoir of bubonic plague, a possible cause of The Black Death. [...] Brown rats actually displaced the black rats, ending the Black Death."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattus_norvegicus#Diseases
"Black rats (or their ectoparasites) are able to carry a number of pathogens, of which bubonic plague (via the rat flea), typhus, Weil's disease, toxoplasmosis and trichinosis are the best known."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattus_rattus
It's also mentioned in the Pixar, animated short, "Your Friend the Rat".

The turning point that told me it was time to leave New York was when I killed a roach in my apartment, opened the window to throw it outside, and another one immediately flew in.

This video will be vital evidence for future historians wondering how New York could experience an outbreak of bubonic plague.
