Crisis garden!

kingofthenothing - 2010-03-12

Been to the site, it sucks. They don't tell people about growing zones or even how to start seeds off or give watering instructions or tell them what kinds of fertilizers would be good for each kind of seed. They don't even give a good amount of seeds. You can do much better on Ebay and make up the difference with seed starter kits at Wal*Mart.

Besides, if the world should end in Winter, what then? Your seeds alone would be useless until at least March, and in some places, April, and you wouldn't actually get that food until June or July. Your family could be eaten by cannibals long before then.

Syd Midnight - 2010-03-12

Because the people selling this crap don't actually believe the worlds going to end, they just want to sell seeds to dumbshits

Kieran27 - 2010-03-12

I love how he thinks every american has a spare acre lying around they're not using. That plastic bucket of seeds costs 7, but for exclusive customers (like anyone who watches this ad) it's 0. There's a few gems on their webpage, like this bit:

Remember, non-hybrid seeds can be grown practically anywhere and have the ability to assimilate mineral and trace elements from the soil that man made plants just don't seem to have. That's because they were created by God as we read in Genesis:

And God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth."

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2010-03-12

Yeah, nevermind the hybrid seeds that have been developed over decades of engineering and selection to survive harsh climates and pesticides...

frau_eva - 2010-03-12

That's exactly what gets me. Sure, engineered seeds have problems, but the idea that we went to all the trouble of engineering seeds so they'd be less resilient is hilarious.

Millard - 2010-03-12

Well, one of the issues is that there is technology in place (but supposedly not commercialized) that can render second-generation GM seeds sterile. I.e. you can plant a crop for a year, but if you collect the seeds from that crop and try to plant them the next year, they'll be sterile. This creates a dependence and the need to repurchase seeds every year.

Again, Monsanto has said that they have not implemented this tech, but they own the company that developed it, so who knows.

It's because of the people bitching that their seeds will run rampant and take over nature. If you're scared of that you can purchase self-destruct seeds but now people bitch about too that because they think farmers are really stupid.

The worst problem with genetically modifying crops is only private companies doing it instead of public institutions so their motive is greed not altruism, but unfortunately that goes for a lot of scientific fields because people hate taxes.

Cat_Mech - 2010-03-13

Unfortunately, Syd, and while I am not an ideologue against GMO's in any way, the business practices being enacted by companies like Monsanto are aggressive and predatory with no effort made to hide their true intentions. They have (you can Google it) made a practice of planting their patented crops in fields next to private farms, waited for the seeds to cross into the farmer's lands, and then sued the individuals for having their patented products without a license, With the amount of money they have backing them, the small farmers have no chance against them.

It is a very efficient, but completely unethical plan of growth. Another good point to look at would be the resistance put up by farm collectives in India to having corporate patented crops forced upon them (like copyright, the corporation retains the ownership of the plant, the farmers only lease the rights to use them) and in some cases, Monsanto and ilk using their power to buy out the local government and force it upon the individuals.

I'm no wild eyed, 'Beware of Frankenfish' type; it's the practice, from the same company that put Agent Orange into play when they knew how dangerous it was, that is brutal and disgusting.

If you like the idea of GMO foods (the good ones can save millions of lives) you should be against Monsanto based purely on the proto-monopolistic business ideology they paint the entire issue with.

Syd Midnight - 2010-03-13

I've already Googled that case and it's about the only case in history where Monsanto is the aggrieved party, the guy cross-fertilized them himself then sold his seed as Monsanto seed without paying royalty. There's a million evil things about Monsanto you can bring up but that's not really a good one.

Of course I'm against Monsanto, they're one of the most purely evil companies ever and should be regulated right out of existence, but then you'd have to replace them with massive government-run GMO research and production and that means more taxes short term which makes that unlikely.

MaulLove - 2010-03-12

Ha ha ha, the line chart at :12 with absolutely no context or data besides GOLD SILVER NON-HYBRID seeds is great.

MaulLove - 2010-03-12

Five starred because I just read this on their website:
" You don't have to be an Old Testament prophet to see what's going on all around us. A belligerent lower class demanding handouts. A rapidly diminishing middle class crippled by police state bureaucracy. An aloof, ruling elite that has introduced us to an emerging totalitarianism which seeks control over every aspect of our lives."

kingofthenothing - 2010-03-12

Even better, listen to the audio testimonials. The Dean of Consciousness from the International Metaphysical University talking about bartering seeds, and burying the package for safekeeping, is enough to get you through any comedy-starved periods in the future, should good humor collapse and "funny" be scarce.

RomancingTrain - 2010-03-13

"A belligerent lower class demanding handouts. A rapidly diminishing middle class crippled by police state bureaucracy."

Where do they think that middle class is going? Is the lower class eating them?

socialist_hentai - 2010-03-12

Can't wait for Glenn Beck to start shilling this crap.

Also: on the subject of Monsanto, GE food etc. I would recommend "We Feed the World" it's an interesting documentary on the modern food industry, less preachy hippies, more outraged farmers.

victorm - 2010-03-13

I have only seen this commercial during Glenn Beck

themilkshark - 2010-03-13

The radio version of this commercial plays during AM radio talk shows about Bigfoot and UFO's

FISTFULLofSOUL - 2010-03-13

The original Jack and his magic beans.

Remember, Cain killed Abel, not the other way around.
