Japanese commercials don't count though.

How did he get the sound of a Satan fuck so perfect?

Jellyneck - 2010-01-14

I'll have to take your word on that

HarrietTubmanPI - 2010-01-14

The thing Hicks never realized is that Leno (while being a complete sellout) was one of the hardest working comics before he landed The Tonight Show. He never took a day off and would leech around for any comic that couldn't make it so he could be the stand in and make more money. Hard working as in never taking a day off, not hard working as in coming up with edgy material.

Leno's goal isn't to be vulgar (excessive) though. His goal is to be insanely rich so he can feed his hobby which is buying every single car ever made.

Although the Tonight Show isn't funny to me, it's funny to mainstream americans who don't want to think too much and don't have a very deep sense of humor. Leno realizes this, and also realizes that he has a cash cow that he can leverage for a higher paycheck with NBC.

He gets ,000,000 a year from NBC.

What most comics that shit on Leno never understand is that Leno is not out to be edgy or funny - so it's pointless to make fun of him for not being that.

But making fun of him for being a complete corporate sellout is another thing completely and is completely fair game.

Let it be said that you cannot be one of the wealthiest comics around and be only understood by 10% of Americans.

Rant over.

aikimoe - 2010-01-14

Actually, Hicks was well aware of how hard-working Leno was. He was also well-aware that Leno used to be funny. He appeared to be attempting to simply tell good jokes. And the more popular he became the less funny he was (or vice-versa). That's why Hicks was so disgusted with him.

dueserpenti - 2010-01-14

Bill Hicks is a total fucking bore and always has been. I don't understand why I'm the only person who thinks so.

James Woods - 2010-01-14

Hahaha.

Bebido - 2010-01-14

Yeah, dude! Way to state your thoughts on a site no one goes to!

jangbones - 2010-01-14

you are asking the wrong question, ask yourself why anyone would care

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2010-01-14

He's not always great, but when he is he's funnier than pretty much any other comic

Goofy Gorilla - 2010-01-14

Well, he's kind of the stand-up comedian for people that don't really like stand-up comedians. He's got the angry shtick down pat, and directs it at stuff his audience can usually all agree on, like Leno's Tonight Show not being very funny. Personally, I don't like his work, but it's understandable that he's some people's cottage pie.

Urkel Forever - 2010-01-14

Yes.

DJRobotron - 2010-01-14

Jay Leno is awful and, taken in small doses, Bill Hicks was moderately funny; however, he chose a gimmick - "I'm the pathologically bitter guy! GRRRRR!" - that is very much an acquired taste. Incidentally it's a taste few comedy fans care to acquire (see the career of Janeane Garofalo). The fact that he's taking a dirt nap now has gone a long way to inflate the hindsight assessment of his artistic impact on audiences.
But the reason I've always waved Bill Hicks away like a fart is his seemingly boundless capacity for serving as the pompous, self-appointed arbiter of who has artistic integrity and who doesn't. ("Here's the deal, folks: You do a commercial, you're off the artistic roll call forever. End of story."). If subjected to Hicks' rigid rubric, it seems Andy Kaufman would be considered a whore because he played a wacky character on a crappy sitcom.
Too many of Bill Hicks' sets are just moral lectures with some jokes and amusing references thrown in. This bit is a textbook example.

snothouse - 2010-01-14

Yeah, this started off interesting, but then just turned into a kind of over-the-top desperation.

MasturbationDestination - 2010-01-14

Couldn't agree more.

hornung - 2010-01-14

i dislike bill hicks too.

Syd Midnight - 2010-01-15

I like him because he was honest to the point of talking about things he shouldn't say in front of strangers much less an audience. He was best when he was having a breakdown.

Spit Spingola - 2010-01-14

Is that Jay Leno in that picture or somebody in prosthetics. I can't even tell anymore.

zatojones - 2010-01-14

bill hicks is boring

Paracelsus - 2010-01-14

Kind of like some of his material, but there's nothing he ever did that Lewis Black didn't do in a more accessible and funnier way, though he too is a pain in the ass.

fatatty - 2010-01-14

Yeah Bill Hicks totally ripped off Lewis Black.

Compare him to any comedian of his time and he is revolutionary. Or at least evolutionary. He paved the way for Cross, Black and Oswalt.

fatatty - 2010-01-14

Also:

Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration — that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death; life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves... Here's Tom with the weather!

James Woods - 2010-01-14

!!!!

Seriously. Bill Hicks was an awesome dream.

You other guys suck.

That's the One Night Stand special he did for HBO at the Vic theater in Chicago right? I believe I have that on bootleg dvd somewhere, great special. Love his bit about the coke ad he'd like to see happen one day.

Paracelsus - 2010-02-05

Didn't say Hicks ripped off Black. Just think Black does/did the schtick better. But Leno is of course a tool. Not that everyone, even St. Hicks the Brutally Annoyed, doesn't sell out eventually.

StanleyPain - 2010-01-14

Anyone actively hating on Hicks for this bit must have been wearing diapers in the 1980s. This was pretty edgy shit back when Leno was everyone's favorite, most worshipped mediocre comedian (with Jerry Seinfeld still working his way up through the ranks). Hicks making fun of him and taking him to task for his commercials was fairly controversial stuff in them that ye olde days.

Pillager - 2010-01-15

Jay is to late night comedy, as Andy Rooney is to news commentary.

Both are funny if you're over 50.

Bill Hicks is a hero to me because he fearlessly assaulted Reagan & all the other conservative bullshit that befell the country. I'd kill to hear his reply to Pat Robertson's latest rant...

fluffy - 2010-01-17

Why did Hicks have to die so young while Leno lived on?

akinskirage - 2010-02-02

Hicks was pretty great.
