An all cartoon network would be a good idea.
Let me go one step further and propose one more network: one devoted only to science fiction.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-10-24

Right around the time the Scifi Channel was starting up, I remember reading an article in a friend's Fangoria by someone furious with MST3K. He concluded his complaints about the show by hoping that the Scifi Channel would the offended movies the respect they deserve.

Xenocide - 2009-10-24

You know what I bet would work?

Music Television.

Hear me out on this: it would be a channel entirely devoted to shows starring Lorenzo Music.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2009-10-24

I have an even better idea, a channel with nothing but news, all day long.

HURF BLURF DUH - 2009-10-24

Sports! There isn't enough sports coverage. I bet a 24/7 sports channel would be a winner.

dementomstie - 2009-10-25

Music Televison! Yes! Re-runs of The Real Ghostbusters, Garfield and Rhoda(where Lorenzo played Carlton the Doorman) all day long, ROCK!

giygusattack - 2009-10-25

"Now, what is the one thing, if you put it in a movie, it'll be successful?"

"Tits."

I rest my case.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-10-24

Oh, that's right, Nick at Nite used to start at 8 PM.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-10-24

Yeah, Fish Police sure worked out for them.

Urburos - 2009-10-24

Its funny, Boomerang is actually a better source of the cartoons I love now than Cartoon Network.

Toenails - 2009-10-24

If anyone wants to know who is responsible for shoving cartoons of the Cartoon Network, it Tim and Eric.

Before Tom Goes to the Mayor, there had never been more than a commercial-break worth of live-action on CN (The Banana Splits may have had skits longer than that, but those where usually used to showcase Toth cartoons). Then one day they have a "behind-the-scenes" episode.

I felt the strangest thing that night it premiered, I knew it was no longer the Cartoon Network but something new entirely.

Of course, I fucking love Tim and Eric and the other live-action adultswim shows it spawned were equally fantastic (Saul of the Molemen, Darkplace, Fat Guy Stuck in Internet, and hopefully Snake and Bacon).

Toenails - 2009-10-24

Just to clarify. none of those shows have anything to do with Tim and Eric, but they would never have been picked up if Tim and Eric weren't as successful as they were.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-10-24

So, essentially, Tim and Eric ruined Adult Swim.

Toenails - 2009-10-24

In that manner of speaking, yes.

I also suspect that when Cartoon Network Proper were getting wind that cheaply made live-action TV was doing just as good, if not better, than their more expensively produced cartoons, then they started switching to live-action scripted and "unscripted" shows.

Just another note of clarification: I love cartoons. I like drawing and I like cartooning myself. I also love anime, because it was the medium that showed my pre-adolescent mind that cartoons didn't have to be childish funny-animals.

That said, adultswim Saturdays ruined adultswim for me. I have never been more disgusted of anime as I was when I watched all those terrible episodes of Witch Hunter Robin.

themilkshark - 2009-10-24

I was so fucking glad adult swim gave Tim and Eric a live action show, got tired of the photoshop filter thing... If you pay attention adult swim is considered a seperate network from Cartoon Network (as far as advertising/demographics are concerned) so what difference would it make if they stopped Cartoon Network after the kids went to sleep and turned it into Jewish Faith Network after hours?

But yeah all that live action shit they're putting on for kids on "The CN" like Teen Scooby is fucking garbage. Johnny Test is fucking great though.

Quad9Damage - 2009-10-25

To me, the day Cartoon Network died was when they showed "Men in Black." In the early evening.

MrBuddy - 2009-10-24

Cartoon Network: live action
MTV : "reality" TV
CNN Headline: entertainment and gossip news
Sci-Fi Channel: professional wrestling
The Learning Channel: wedding, babies & fashion shows
Arts & Entertainment: Dog The Bounty Hunter
History Channel: Ice Road Truckers

Where did it all go wrong?

Hooper_X - 2009-10-24

Game Show Network has a fucking reality show.

themilkshark - 2009-10-24

ABC has like nothing to do with the alphabet at ALL anymore. And you know what? I've never even SEEN a fox on FOX! Don't get me started about Fox NEWS!

dead_cat - 2009-10-25

Money

fluffy - 2009-10-25

Discovery Channel was the last hold-out for intelligent entertainment, but then they started running shit like Ghost Lab and Cash Cab and whatever fucking else and lately my TiVo has been getting less and less use as anything other than an expensive Netflix streaming box.

I think when my 3 year TiVo subscription runs out I'm just going to get a Roku box and call it a day.

thebaronsdoctor - 2010-12-07

It's the inevitable cycle of a network:

-Network starts out on shaky ground, uses obscure stuff from the company vault to fill out unused timeslots
-Network begins to achieve some success, is able to bring in more and more high profile programs
-Network begins producing more of its own original programming
-Network achieves enough success for the suits to really take interest. Pressure to make money is higher than ever
-Suits begin trying to manage success, they look for the most popular programs (Either on their own network or on their competitors) and saturate the channel with it
-Channel devolves into Freak shows and COPS reruns

The only network that's managed to completely avoid this is CSPAN.

Quad9Damage - 2009-10-25

I remember being a kid and watching "Bugs and Daffy" at 3 in the morning in a haze, and it being all surreal.

Quad9Damage - 2009-10-25

Also, do they even do June Bugs anymore?

themilkshark - 2009-10-26

Yeah the animated intros/outros during that time were fucking trippy

thebaronsdoctor - 2010-12-07

I always liked Networks best when they're in their early days because they tend to show some really obscure stuff to fill in time slots.

For example, back when it was first created, Teletoon used to fill in time by airing things like National Film Board animated shorts, animation documentaries and obscure Russian animated films.

Nowadays it's all live action movies and whatever's hot on CN.
