Ugh, the video is playing, but I can't pause it. Mission accomplished, WNED.

I remember these exact people from when I was a kid. This is part of my hatred of Buffalo. I don't think I can rate it fairly.

Wytze! - 2009-08-05

The Buffalo feed also carried over to Southern Ontario. I remember watching Reading Rainbow, and being interrupted by these hams. They used to make these requests to children like "Hey buddy! Do you want to get your mom or dad for me?" Mom was pretty pissed when she found out she was needed to pledge for PBS.

Yes... S.Ontario as well. My other hatred of Buffalo stems from 'family friends' we had that lived there. A sausage fingered, creepy little ham of a man who laughed at his own jokes and his whiny stump faced wife. They would drop in unexpectedly and help themselves to our hospitality and expect us to laugh at his awful jokes, and play along with her mincing drama. I felt that for this and the accent alone Buffalo should be burned to the ground.

Well I guess I'm just as guilty with my kids. "I am NOT pressing play again until the dishes are cleared from the table and your laundry is brought downstairs."

GOLDIE GODDAMN GARDENER.

Yeah, I grew up in the Buffalo area and PBS fund drive time was... interminable.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2009-08-05

I almost watched the whole thing, but then I got distracted by the "Pretty Much Everywhere, Its Gonna Be Hot" in the also liked list.

THEN I DON'T NEED A PBS JACKET

Passive agressive power trip!

I've spent a tragic chunk of the last 30 years trying to track down a copy of a PBS attempt at fund raising that went horribly, horribly wrong. Back in '79, WHYY showed "The Five Doctors" followed by "The Rutles" during pledge-drive week. One of the station's executives thought that it would be a good idea if his spastic teenage Dr. Who fan son co-hosted the event. The kid kept interrupting the others hosts by spontaneously shouting out Dr. Who trivia and prefacing each factoid with "I betcha didn't know, did ya? Did ya? That..."

Crank calls began pouring in from all over the Delaware Valley. At one point, one of the co-hosts picked up a phone to speak to what he thought was someone pledging 0, and viewers were treated to "Why don't we get back to the show? Why don't you go suck your son!" Yes, he said "son" and not "thumb". In the years following I've speculated he was more than a little angry at the exec's kid. Later on, the same guy strolled up to one of the phone bank volunteers (a mousy young woman in her early 20's) and asked her if she'd just received a call for a big pledge. When she replied that the caller had been "Some kid trying to be funny" the older co-host began berating her with shouts of "Goddamn it; don't you know you're not supposed to say that. Are you retarded?"

During one of the final pledge breaks in The Five Doctors, it was suggested by one of the older co-hosts that Beatles fans call in during the showing of The Rutles (which the staff didn't seem to understand is a kick in the groin to the Beatles) and try to top the pledges of the Dr. Who fans. This caused the creepy kid to shout "Don't even bother! You'll never beat us Whovians, so don't even try! Don't waste your time calling in!"

That sounds like a worthy life cause to me. Please post it if you ever find it.

"The Five Doctors" came out in 1983.

BHWW - 2009-08-05

Five starring because this reminds me of all of the awful PBS pledge drives I saw in my youth. I think the worst were during PBS "Dr. Who" marathons: co-hosts wearing embarssing costumes, going full steam ahead with awkward scripted banter and unfunny jokes.

Brigadoon is my favorite movie about a hellish purgatorial sub-netherworld.

In Scotland.

All praise to PBS for allowing goofy-looking fucks like these people to get to be on TV.

Plus side: No TV license fees
Minus side: This is America's BBC, literally begging for handouts.
