Pokemon, the ultimate cash cow.

mashedtater - 2009-06-29

that's right.

SUCK BALLS, beanie babies.

badideasinaction - 2009-06-29

I had some friends that worked at a comics/game shop - they actually had the experience of saying "I'm sorry, I cannot responsibly sell you anymore" to some kids buying pokemon on more than one occasion. Stories like that ensured that despite being a giant fucking nerd I let that entire train pass me by.

twinkieafternoon - 2009-06-28

"Even little girls will like them."

"Big and mean, for the boysth."

The video production company dressing two people like a Puerto Rican tarzan and jane for the joke of them talking about monkeys playing Pokemon.

"Charizard, Venasaur, Blastoise, Raichu and Mewtwo."

"Energies, and energies."

5 stars.

poorwill - 2009-06-28

I am 31 years old and I could probably remember all the names of the first 151 Pokemon.

poorwill - 2009-06-28

Also, I have a beard.

Monchiles Monchiles - 2009-06-28

How could you not though when every show ended with a brainwashing rap song to forever embed the names of every pokemon in your brain for life?

Jellyneck - 2009-06-29

That would have made him 21 years old in 1999. A 21 year old has absolutely no business watching that much pokemon all the way through to the credits in order to memorize 151 nonsense words.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-06-29

But, that doesn't stop them from doing it.

Billie_Joe_Buttfuck - 2009-06-28

Pedophile arm wrap.

Toenails - 2009-06-28

Pokemon will always have a special place in my heart. Not, because I actually ever played the game. But my hometown, Topeka, was the that Nintendo used as a platform to launch Pokemon in America.

http://www.cjonline.com/stories/082798/com_pokemon0827.shtml (remove spaces where needed)

Our mayor at the time even renamed the city "ToPikachu" in honor of the city being used as a gimmick to sell this electronic crack.

Ugh.

Toenails - 2009-06-28

What the fuck??? I think I broke poeTV!!! :(

Billie_Joe_Buttfuck - 2009-06-28

Please say you know how you did it.

Toenails - 2009-06-28

I don't know... must have been something with that address I copied and pasted into the comments (It does link to a page over ten years old).

Although, I think it's that space between the address and parenthesis, because I honestly thought I put a paragraph between the two.

l (

Trying it to see if it works.

Dicknuts - 2009-06-28

Holy crap, I'm from Topeka and didn't even know that!

Toenails - 2009-06-28

Dicknuts, unless you are under 20 years old or have been smoking weed for the last ten years, I seriously don't know what to tell you. It was just about the biggest deal our one-horse town had for quite awhile (until Bush and Kerry came to Topeka during their campaign stop on the same day to honor the Brown v. Board museum).

http://www.dailypress.com/news/national/bal-te.topeka18may18,0 ,1776509.story (let's see if this bolds)

If you aren't quite 20, then you or your friends probably have a tiny stuffed pikachu laying around somewhere. It looks like a Chinese knockoff, but I'm sure it's worth a lot of money.

If it's cause you have been smoking weed all this time, then you need to hook a fellow up! I've been dry for months.

sosage - 2009-06-28

What makes me sad is that these 10 year olds are now 20. Where has the time gone?

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-06-28

Everything seemed pretty standard for Pokemon until that Tarzan and Jane pair showed up. What the Hell were they even doing there?

Sputum - 2009-06-28

I really wasn't prepared for something made in the 90's to look so dated. I feel old, and I was probably in the same grade as most of those kids at the time.

Jet Bin Fever - 2009-06-28

I remember thinking at the time that Pokemon was like Magic the Gathering watered down and squeezed through a Japanese person's asshole.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2009-06-29

from toenail's link:
For dial-up Internet connections (28.8+), go here to take a RealVideo sneak peek at the Pokemon

Billie_Joe_Buttfuck - 2009-06-29

test

Toenails - 2009-06-29

actually, not to derail this anymore. (Although, I'm fairly confident that those that wanted to comment on the video done so already)

My new theory is how long the address is. When I copied and pasted it the second time, I noticed that it is exactly as long as the box given to type the comments in. Mayhaps something to do with filling a line with text and no spaces somehow fucks with the font?

http://www.cjonline.com/stories/082798/com_pokemon0827.shtml test

I don't know if having a word right afterwords is necessary or not.

TeenerTot - 2009-06-29

Five stars because:
1. I used to work at a toy company and had to crank out digital pokemon crap all day. I still hear "PIKACHU!! I CHOOSE YOU!!" in quiet moments.
2. The host guy's mannerisms remind me of VenomfangX.

Xenocide - 2009-06-29

AND THEN I GET TO WIN.

You sure do, kid. You sure do.

twinkieafternoon - 2009-09-20

As opposed to gym class, where he never wins.

thebaronsdoctor - 2009-06-29

Here's how to make money off childhood nostalgia:

1. Notice what the latest craze among kiddies is
2. Wait for said craze to die down
3. Pick up merchandise for cheap from second hand stores and garage sales
4. Wait ten years, then sell merchandise back to nostalgic twenty-somethings with more money than common sense.

Also: Octillery is the best pokeman of them all.

memedumpster - 2009-06-29

Oh yeah, I remember this game. I walked into a bookstore one day to find a hundred kids trading these things like it was the floor of the stock market. It was terrifying to watch children behave so adult, especially in contrast to the adults who played Magic the Gathering who often acted like children.

The world never really recovered, did it?
