I hate Mondays.

Frank Rizzo - 2009-06-27

holy shit, this reminds me of this terrible poster from 10th grade chemistry...

I am not one to jump over people who don't use the "proper" definition of the word. Yes, I understand what is being conveyed by the use of the word osmosis, and yes I understand that Old Zircon is simply referencing the poster.

But ever since I was a little kid that saw that poster on the wall of the cafeteria/classroom/hallway, every single adult has pointed out that that is not, in fact, demonstrating osmosis.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/osmosis

It just made me wonder, that with everyone having to point out that the poster is scientifically inaccurate, why did the school get it in the first place? What sort of purpose, other than a throw-away visual pun that Jeff Davis spent all of ten minutes drawing instead of looking up the word in the dictionary? Wouldn't "I'm learning by Transference" be a better phrase?

Apologies for a rant and a derail about something we can all agree would be made trivial as soon as one of you guys point out that the books are actually soaking wet.

Toenails - 2009-06-27

TL;DR

The improper use of a word, even if it is easy to understand through context or accepted use, leaves me very nonplussed.

memedumpster - 2009-06-27

I, uh, normally wouldn't do this, but...

... it's Jim. Jim Davis.

Toenails - 2009-06-27

I suppose your one of those people who like trying to tell me that "Micheal Jackson" is actually not the person that died this week?

(I know I shouldn't have been posting at 2:33 AM)

memedumpster - 2009-06-27

Who?

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2009-06-27

It's a joke for the exact reason it doesn't illustrate osmosis.

Toenails - 2009-06-27

Big, you're telling me that Jim (sorry meme) Davis is saying that Garfield wants to learn from books, but doesn't actually want to read them. So, he straps them around his body and says that he'll learn through osmosis, but if he actually bothered to read one of the books, he'd know that "osmosis" pertains to liquids moving through a membrane, and thus illustrating the ineffectiveness of strapping books to your body in order to learn? Wow, that is the most layered and insightful joke that Mr. Davis has ever produced.

Dr Dim - 2009-06-27

You should probably add a section about this to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmosis. You could put it under "Osmosis in Popular Culture". Possibly cross reference it to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garfield.

Camonk - 2009-06-27

Jesus, you pussy. Welcome to language. Words get co-opted from their niche disciplines and used by the rest of the culture. The meaning changes. Jesus get over it. "Valid" doesn't mean "reasonable"! Gasp! I hate when people use valid in regular conversation to refer to just a good point!

Only I don't because I'm a grownup.

Old_Zircon - 2009-06-27

The great thing about this is I didn't ahve any memoryof that poster, I just misused "osmosis" because I was tired and it sounded funnier than "absorption" or something else more correct.

chairsforcheap - 2009-06-27

tonails: go fuck yourself

baleen - 2009-06-27

Toenails, did you know that sometimes words have multiple meanings. It's true.

Keefu - 2009-06-27

Excellent song choice, Mr. 200412724

Camonk - 2009-06-27

Is this all just one guy who plays awful, awful music with raspy-voiced front men? I thought it was a fad for some reason.
