Man, I had this mellow, and these cats just harshed it.

Can someone talk about these folks? Keefu, Lurchi, Merzbau? Kind of enjoying this, as well as that Moonshake track. Am I so young ... ? How is this Krautrock?

Keefu - 2009-05-04
They're krautrock, despite the Japanese singer in the video. They were a majority German group besides the position of the singer.

They're also important for bringing a lot of avant garde influence to other bands who came after. Bands from The Fall, Talking Heads to Radiohead have cited them. They're pretty awesome! Their three most important albums are Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days but Ege Bamyasi is your best bet if you're just starting out. Give them a try.

This song is on Soundtracks- seconding Keefu's recommendations for albums, but Soundtracks and Soon Over Babaluma are excellent followups if those first three tickled your fancy. Monster Movie is good too, but it features their first (American) singer Malcolm Mooney and is pretty substantially different; Lurchi posted a song from it earlier today ("Mary, Mary So Contrary"). Flow Motion is widely regarded as the beginning of the end of their classic period, but it's still a damn fine listen and has the totally unfuckwithable "I Want More". Avoid Saw Delight, Out of Reach, and the self-titled album like syphilis, because that's about how much fun they are.

All of the members have gone on to solo careers of some kind; the only one whose solo work I'm familiar with is bassist Holger Czukay, whose Movies and Full Circle albums are well worth your time.

Delay 1968 is my favorite Mooney era album.

I kind of think everything past "Soon Over Babaluma" isn't too great. "Flow Motion" gets a "kind of okay" rating from me.
