This is awesome. I love the bit about how he should get some sort of credit for all the days he didn't get in a crash. Being a manbaby must be so fun.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2009-05-01

Dude, you conjured that up out of thin air.

Cleaner82 - 2009-05-01

I'm trying to start a disinformation campaign.

He actually makes some good points, none of which really make a case for drunk driving.

A long sentence for DUI seems crazy, though.

splatterbabble - 2009-05-01

Some judge was probably trying to make a point. He doesn't explain if the case was appealed.

Dinanukht - 2009-05-01

Maybe it's partly due to the fact that the videos I normally watch on poetv are of creationists positing the existence of fire breathing dragons or bigots explaining why gay marriage caused September 11th, but, in contrast, this seems downright reasonable.

I've always found it very odd that in most states operating a bicycle drunk is the same in the eyes of the law as operating a bus full of children while drunk. I suppose the message is if you're drunk and you need to get somewhere, you may as well drive.

He makes one or two good points, but he doesn't really address the fact that there are so few drunk driving accidents probably because people don't want to get their licences suspended.

Either way, if he got arrested for what he says he did, that is indeed bullshit.

takewithfood - 2009-05-01

His argument seems to boil down to: "Laws against drunk driving are SO EFFECTIVE that we don't need them because drunk driving hardly ever hurts anyone because the laws are SO EFFECTIVE."

Let's apply that logic elsewhere! Hey, why do I eat all this food every day? I'm 29 and I haven't ever starved to death, so why all the food? I spend SO MUCH MONEY on food, and yet people in my country almost never starve to death. STOP EATING FOOD EVERYONE!

Argh.

I consider drunk driving to be a little like indiscriminately firing a gun in public: Even if you only do it once every 34 years, and even if you don't hit anyone, I'd really prefer it if the police got involved.

Walt Henderson - 2009-05-01

The neighbors always called the police whenever they heard Jeff abusing Statistics, but the cops never did anything about it. Finally, after a long night of drinking and biking, he came home and beat her to death. Then he fed the body to his lawyer, and posted the video on YouTube.

Mister Yuck - 2009-05-01

This isn't really unreasonable. Drunk driving laws are effective and there is no reason to keep ramping them up. But we do, and we will continue to, because no one wants to end their political career by voting against DD legislation. It's similar to how ridiculous drug law has gotten.

SolRo - 2009-05-01

We shouldn't stop ALL drunk driving, just most of it.

People need the pictures of disfigured DD victims to make themselves feel better.

Heh. I remember this guy's story being featured in one of the alt-weeklies here in Columbus two years ago. He's got a website too:

Considering that in some countries have significantly harsher laws than the US, it could be argued that he got off easy.

That's a point I made over at the youtube comments. If you're caught driving a car with even a drop of alcohol in most European countries, you lose your license FOREVER! No second chances! There was even a guy bragging on there about how he had been driving his car for 18 years without a license. Hope the cops caught him!
